[ THURSDAY, JUNE 10, 1909. | Appreciation. " We never fully realized tliei loyalty of our friends in King-' r; stroe to the old Countv Record i until this week. when a stranggrj k from another county came over toj - feel the pulse of the community, looking to the establishing of an-! other paper in the town. The! Bc-scaut encouragement given tht*| R; representative of the proposed venBftore and the mauv voluntary exKrpressions of good will and appreKi t/\ ward the faithful Ser rant that has stood for the best w interests of our people through ffgood and evil fortune, rejoicing iu j B their prosperity and sorrowing in i| their adversity, for more than a f.'ioore of years, touch us to the B heart, and anew and more heart IJy than ever, we dedicate The ^Becord to Kingstree and WilK liamsburg coanty, pledging our un^ altering effort, and all our am^Bition and energies, to the up^Mkiknng of the old county and ^Hhe enlightening of her people, so ^Eftr as in oar power lies. R We have had an abiding faith I^Bja the fatnre of our town and HHnxity, and jnst now we need to ~4* - ^ ?a<i.a>Uap n?*/J f AW ISUftUU tVgVbUCl auu nui u kui common good. '-Old friends, .old. swords, still are trusted ty fe thank our friends, one and for their warm words of; mendation for the paper and; i than ever will we strive to! e worthy of the praise and | ^dence so generously bestowed ; ore than a year has elapsed t Calhoun county was organjtjwJ they are still squabbling I the bnilding of the court te and jail. It seems that r to the election, as an inment the voters, the town of latthewa guaranteed to put up [court house and jail for POCT, ana it was promised I the country people would not Idled on to pav a cent toI the buildings. Now, it is ned to bond the county of Ian for $30,000 to supple I the town'8 $20,000, as three ^judges have urged the i of respectable public g3 at a coet of at least % Harpers correspondent's ?his week touching the l?erment of the county is ad to the point. It is & we should be up and ut what can be done the figures, maps, etc, !rom the official survey 2ssed so far as this end ie? is concerned, while county advocates seem nished with all the daeed for amending their Ind marking out new lines. Maybe we will access to the records election is ordered, for ^rill of course be ?-it in Sftuujf irove township is taming against he Rut ledge idea, it would not iurpri8e us at all if another amendment be asked for, leaving out ;hat portion of the proposed irea, and Williamsburg be put to the expense of still another surrey. It seems that all the new county promoters have to do is to call up Governor Ansel over the long-distance 'phone and that obliging official smilingly assents to any proposition submitted to him bv the new countvites. Whether or not the new county be f irmed, the old couuty, as we understand it, has to bear all the expense of surveys, vtc, however numerous and costlv they may l?e. That being the case, it seems not unreasonable that the who pviwt to remain in the old county should want to sec a copy of the surveyors' report and the official map of the territory surveyed. The first survey?the one supposed to be finished?costs about $1,500, so we are informed. The second one, now in progress, will add considerably more to the expense alreadv incurred, and there is no telling how many more our Rutledge friends will require before the earth is cut to suit their taste, Lee county's new court house, recently completed, cost $75,000. Our Rutledge county friends propose to erect both the court und iail fnr ftOf). and AJ UUOV ?*UU j wit *v? ?? ? even that amount seems to be problematical. The several surveys that have been made looking to the formation of Dillon county have already cost the people of Marion county over $6,000, it is said, and the end is nut yet. If many more surveys are made of the llutledge county area, it may be necessarv to levy a special tax next year to pay the bills of the surveyors. No, "Anxious Inquirer," Mr Stewart Starr is uot a member of the new county commission appointed by Governor Ansel. Reply lo "Pro Bono Publico." Editor County Kecord:? While I heartily endorse the action of the Spartanburg county t-nstppR in sudinp their teachers to W. -WW ? Q attend a summer school, I would not endorse such action on the part of Williamsburg's trustees. The school fund of Spartanburg county for 1907-08 was more than $120,000, and at the close of the year the treasurer held $31,000 to the credit of the schools. Williamsbnrg's total school fund is about $46,000 and will close thi3year with about $3,000 to the credit of our schools. You will easily see that we have no money to spend along the line suggested. Probably the greatest need of our county is more money for the schools. J G McCullough, Supt of Education. Kingstree, S C, June 2. Bu$lne$$ Manager^ Jong. Mr II B Smith, the chairman of the new county commission and our representative on the board, informed us that the official surveyors had notified him that they would be ready to submit their report to the full commission on Tuesday, June 8, and | that he (Mr Smith) had called a ' i i-i ? / i: A .. meeting to oe neia in wite vh,> i i on that day. On Monday, June I j ?. Mr Smith says that Mr Stew-! i art Starr wrote him that the i surveyor.- had advised hiin (Mrj Starr) that they could not malrej their report on the day appoint-j ed because they had misplaced' some of their data and had todoi ^ | the work over. Mr Starr alsoj I stated that lie had thereupon sent out notices to the several members of the commission not1 to meet on the day appointed, j (Mr Starr, we believe, was api pointed or elected secretary of! the commission at some time in I tiie remote oast). - - X j We learned subsequently that the postponed meeting of the commission would be held in Lake City tomorrow (Friday). ELLERBE'S LEG BROKEN. Distressing Accident to Oar Representative in CongressWashington, June 6:?The friends of Representative Ellerbe wil^ regret to learn that he has bee so unfortunate as to break his leg. On Friday night he was standing in the main lobby of the Metropolitan hotel, where he resides during the sessions of Congiess, and, without any apparent cause, slipped with the result that the bone in his left leg was fractured. He was at once taken to Providence hospital in this city. Reports to-night are that, while he is suffering considerable pain, he is doing very well. It will be some time before Mr Ellerbe will be able to leave the ; hospital, but as soou as this can be done he will go to Marion, Mrs Ellerbe has been advised of the accident and will probably come to Washington and remain with Mr Ellerbe until he i3 able to go home.
