AT AniMim; SECRETARY HILARY A HERBERT AN ROUKCES FUN TO BUILD MEMORIAL IMMEDIATELY?THE DETAILS. The News and Courier has receive^! j the following; communication: To the Daughters of the Ooiif?-cleraoy of South Carolina: Below will be found a letter from Col HilaryHerbert that speaks for itself. This has been sent to me with the request that as your president I bring it l?e' fore the chapter of our division. If each chapter will co-ojierate in p this plan, as suggested by Col Herbert, a very small contribution from a number of people will swell South 1 Carolina's fund. Fine work has al* ready been done by our committee, j and now let us give them our hearty [ support in this. Send all contributions by bank checks to Mrs T W Kiett, director A ^ C M A, Clemson College, S C, and she will at ouce acknowledge same,) Faithfully yours, Mrs Robert !) Wkicht, President S 0 Division, V I) C. p? Newberry, April 30, 1901). t A plan to build at once the CONFEDERATE MONUMENT AT ARLINGTON. K All who honor the courage and ? devotion of the Confederate soldier will nl?fup rp? d B Some years ago, under a generous K act of the United States Congress, || it government expense the remains , K of 265 Confederate soldiers, then B>: scattered throughout Arlington and P the District of Columbia, were gathp ?red and interred together in a beans' tifnl spot now known as the Confed* K'erate section in Arlington cemetery, I . each grave marked with a marble headstone, identifying the soldier Kywhen possible. Practically every KLponfederate State is named on those fc/. Later the United States Congress Bgate by unanimons note $200,000 to P'Oire for the graves of those who died Northern prisons. Each of these B soldiers, where known, is to nave a B separate headstone, and the remains' H of tiie unknown, it lias now oeen ue CKled by the President, are to be grouped under appropriate morningV In the centre of the Confederate Resection at Arlington is left a mound. Tliere, in sight of Washington city, R.where for untold generations the American and the foreigner will be ^ pilgrims, the Confederates themselves Hire expected to build a memorial, jRjwhich will typify their love of and Rfcneration for their dead. R Soon after the reinterment at Ar^Rington, Confederate organizations in ^BWashingtou began to move in this ^Ratter. In 1906 the United Daugh Kra of the Confederacy, 111 conven^Rention at Gnlfport, endorsed the ^Bmfement and subscribed to it. In ^ $07 at Norfolk the daughters took charge, appointing directors in ^Rpl* several States and an executive Rpmmittee at Washington. All went ^Rfomptly to work. This sum and will be subscribed by our ids at once if they are properly ited; Each local chapter of the jhters is therefore hereby earnestquested to: Ask the local newspapers, which always public-spirited, to print appeal in two (or more, if daiof their issues preceding the Ibid? local Memorial day, calling ention to the appeal and reiuforc; it with editorials, f. Amounts thus collected, lossj necessary expenses, will be sent by, check or express to Mr Wallacei >trealtor, treasurer,3,1 ??0 l>th street, Washington, 1) C, who will duly j acknowledge as well as publish in j the Confederate Veteran of Xa?hville, Tenn. This plan energetically carried j oat u is earnestly hoped will at once' enable the organization to ask for designs and bids to be submitted to the I" U C at the next convention. ( It will be gratifying indeed if the , building by the Federal government of the monument it is about to erect J, over our unknown dead around I Northern prisons shall be promptly followed by the consummation of1 our own plans for such a memorial! at Arlington as shall be a source of pride to us and our posterity. Should every chapter of the Daughters in all the land, whether it < is or is not otherwise observing Me* < morial day, unitedly rise to this workas we confidently expect and in the j space of one day raise the sum neces- , sary to complete this monument, < what a glorious spectacle of love and ', Datriotism this will present. i ( I * , , By order of Mrs Cornelia Branch ] Stone, president general, U I) C, this 10th day of April, 1900.
