~ ,-r - ? -< The Encouragement ol this Crop Is Sooth Carolina Attracts Wide Attention. Cotton is still king down South, and there is no reason to think that I it will be dethroned in our time. The j cotton that is exported represents a j sum large enough to pay our enor-1 mons balances in Europe, for the ex -1 penses and purchases of tourists, for1 v goods imported, for transportation j by sea ar.d for interest on foreign money invested iu the United States. But down South King Cotton has occupied the Held too exclusively. Ic has been too uiuch the policy to devote the entire energies ot the planters to that one crop an?l then have to use the money received for cotton j ^ to buy things that ought to have " been raised at home. The South is getting away from this unwise policy and is paying more attention to raising corn ami other food. In the ten years ended with 1906 theproduc. tiou of corn in the South was nearly 700,000,000 bushels greater than in t the previous decade. The corn crop of South Carolina alone increased by over a million bushels a year. Iu order to still further increase the crop of that State the Legislature has offered a series of prizes to be awarded to those who can raise the largest number of bushels on one or live acres. There are separate prizes for boys. This is a pract?cal way to interest farmers iu corn growing and to secure the use of the best seed and i the best methods of fertilizing and cultivating. The contests held in forraer years, the State commissioner of agriculture says, "have been of immense value to tbe State in dollars and cents, as has been demonstrated bj their iuflnence upon the remarkable advance made in the value of the corn crop in South Carolina in the lust two years." The production of corn naturally suggests the production of bacon, and when that is i done the people will have bread and meat, eveu if the boll weevil eats op ; the cotton crop.?Baltimore Sua. IsZiaS.g'St How to Increase the Yield of Fruit Increased fruit crops are more often the result of good manage ment than of good luck. Fruit trees and fruit plants need a liberal supply of Virginia-Carolina ITT ?_ I_* reruuztrs The trees absorb plant foods?that is, nitrogen, phosphoric acid and potash?from the soil just the same as any other crop. Experience has shown this over and over again. This truth has become so well recognized that" return to the land what the tree removes if you would expect the best results " has become an axiom with the best growers. f; Apple, pear, peach, orange and other fruit trees soon respond to careful fertilization. But be sure to use the best fertilizers. " I made a test with other companies' fertilizers," says Mr. H. O. of Manatee County, Fda., "and yours proved to be the best, 'eld where I used Virginia-Carolina Fertilizer, was just twice as is where the other two companies' fertilizer was used." . eds of users say Virginia-Carolina Fertilizers are cheapest because of their good qualities?give better satisfaction and quicker results. Many facts of great interest and value to fruit growers are published in the new 1909 Farmers' Year Book, a copy of which will be sent free on application to any of our sales offices.
