'' ???????????? i THURSDAY. DEC. 10. 1908. t 1 I t Queer Card of Thanks. The following card of thanks, I clipped from the Newbeiry News & Herald, is unique in the way's of suggestive phraseology. The i e writer, we infer, was a tenderfoot jt in the game of politics and a f guileless stranger to the devious i ways of the wily politician. He r believes his defeat to be a direct \ interposition ot Divine influence c and in a dream after the election t saw things that "changed his aoul." Certainly here is a forceful illustration of the sentiment ei- ^ pressed in the familiar old hymn, I "God moves in a mysterious way, * His wonders to perform." J The "card" reads as follows: c Many thanks to the kind friends e that voted for me for the office of 0 commissioner of public works. But, kiud f riends.let Die tell you all right now and forever more I never intend to enter politics any more. I believe p it was God's will for me not to be elected. I had a aream the night af- e ter the election that has changed my <3 soul and 1 have been telling every j person who voted for me and thosa wh^ didn't vote for me,to deal square and upright with all classes, both white and black. God has changed my life and given me a different b feeling towards everybody. 1, Very respectfully, Fred J Russell. 11 "Hoch der Kaiser Coghlan." The death of Rear Admiral Ooseph B' Coghlan last Sunday T recalls the famons poem, 4,Hoch q - der Kaiser/' which he recited at t, a banquet given in his honor in -New York after his triumphant treturu from the Philippines in || 1899, where he had taken a bril- | liant part in the battle of Manila Bay, being, it is said, second only t to Admiral Dewey himself in D fighting prowess. This satiric poem ^ coming at a time of strained re- ^ lations between Uncle Sam and i. i c "der Kaiser"' by reason of the j attitude of certain German naval officers at Manila towards Admiral t Dewey, it was feared would pre- c cipitate trouble with the German ^ W S Emperor and President McKinley a reprimanded Admiral Coghlan in ^ a public letter for his indiscre- c tion. As it turned out, however, f Emperor William saw the joke and laughed heartily over it and I thus the incident closed except ^ that ever afterward the Admiral e was referred to as *'Hoch der C K-aiser" Coghlan. I The press despatches report ( ?? ^?cttor Tillman "much disappoint- a ed by the double call upon him at this time," this being the tirsi \ time in thirteen years that he has ^ missed the opening roll-call of the 1 c Senate. Senator Tillman's record < c for punctuality in attending the a opening sessions of the branch of t Congress of which he is a mem- \ ber are of course highly commendable, but he should blame ho I one but himself for the disap- i pointmeut he experienced at not * being able to answer two calls of c duty simultaneously. The point is that Senator Tillman has tena- a ciously clung to that Clemson i College trusteeship in plain viola- i \ ion of the State constitution that! i le himself helped to frame, and, le has been permitted to do so| )ecause?well, because lie is Tillnan. It is with genui.ie pleasure that j ve give prominence to Lie an-, louncenietit of a "Fanners' Rally lay" at Harpers, with tlfc objects | n view /set forth so clearly and1 forcibly by oi'r wide-a-wake Har>ers correspondent. The example ;et by Harpers is worthy of emuatiou. The citizens of that comnunity deserve success for their rarnest efforts toward uplifting heir condition and as a rule peo>lc get what they deserve. It can be demonstrated to an ab* olate certainty that the remedy for ight cent cotton and, withal, the emporal salvation of the Souther^ armer, is diversified crops ai 11 tensive farming. But it by n neans follows that this system vill be followed, as the farmers ?f the South are habitually blind o their best iuterests. Our columns are opeu for the liscussion of the uew county >roposition. We shall be glad to lear from any one on the subect and we bespeak respectful onsideration for the views of very one, regardless of whether r not we agree with the writer. One of our contemporaries comlains that it has 1000 subscribrs in arrears. Well, we are not uite that bad off and we d<~ " atend to get so, either. Reduced acreage, variety of crOj etter cultivation ana arainage?t that be the slogan of Wilamsburg farmers for the year 909. There is another subject we inlte discussion upon?good roads. .V> much attention cannot be giveD 0 this vitally important question. j Additional Locals. | Correspondents must sign heir names?their real names, lot initials or mim-dc plume?to eceive attention. It does seem hat some of our friends would inally learn that this rule must; >e complied with when they ex-j >ect their letters to be printed. Kingstree has a right to feel proud of her two banks. Both of them make splendid showings and rellect great credit on the excellence of their management, which has gained them the confidence of the public generally.
