Mr Kditor, it is j?i-t im for farmers to !iu"tnd rat.-o o: for ei<;ht cents at tiie present j?rice of other - onimo lilies?bacon 12 to lo cents a pound, corn sii.L'o a Sa-;K and jjrits, meal and 11 >ut in he same proportion. L-t us see some of the faults of our farmers. 1 will vouch-safe to say that some ? of them will buy hay to feed thenstock in 1900 who now have their fields waist hioh in hay that will he burned off before next planting time. Farmers, let me ?-' : as one of if tii!ii hH?! <ltrill<T HH JUU l'> Ctt IV/ n HI'I ?? | ^ ? plant enough food crop* to supply our needs. We cm produce on the farm almost every tiling we need, from washing soap to live-stock, viz., horses, mules, etc., and we caii raise fifty bushels of corn to the acre on our lands. With a plenty of coru as a basis it is an easy matter to have all the bacon, chickens, I eggs, beef, milk and butter that we want. And then we can make oats "Nrge quantities and save seed for Bother crop. I doubt if as much Is 500 bushels of seed oats have ten saved from the 1908 crop: aUo, or most of t hem at M have to buy their seed n t in 1909 at $3.00 the B is has beeu their custom for -t vpftra. ^^B^^Tsow is the time to gather peaaeed and I suppose some farmers have forgottou what they paid for their pea-seed, if the farmers of old Williamsburg will adopt w hat ahould be the Golden Rule they would raise a plenty of corn, peas, *weet potatoes, Irish potatoes, sorghum cane, oats, vegetables, poultry .and eggs, also bacou then trulv would the land How with milk and honey, as fair as the garden of the Lord. What surplus land we have could be pnt in cotton and in three years time you would see i\ happy and prosperous people with 110 kick coming, let cotton bring eight cents or what it pleased. Cotton alone will never pay the mortgage on the * * 1 farm nor inaKe any or lit inufj>eiident. I hope to see our farmers form clubs by neighborhoods, townships and counties to put tnis golden rule into effect. n| Mr Editor, sweet potatoes are be H^Bfoming plentiful at Harpers and the writer had two veiy fine opossums this week that with tile "Georgia w^m Bucks" went well together. (Now what's the use to tell us about those 'possums and -tutors H when we have to live 011 canned goods half the time? We'll pay the T express; let 'em come ) Some time ago your scribe made mention of a field of corn planted at Hai|?ers by Mr W S Catnliu, Jr., on the Williamson plan and stated that the result of his experiment would be given later iu The Record. Mr Cumliu gathered this corn last week and it measured 4.") bushels to the acre. The cost of producing this corn was 32 1-2 cents a bushel, coveriug the entire expense. This being Mr ('amiins fCst. experience iu the "stunting process," he thinks he stunted it too much; the corn being of au early I variety was nearly taseehng before it 14 was ploughed the first time. Mr H Cam 1 in will repeat his experiment flf next vear on a larger scale. m The low price of the "staple" .somewhat stagnates business in our B^ toyvn. but the merchants have on BgHflfhe merry smile just the same.
