Lake Gyty, September 16: tBm The biggest rain of the year, some say the biggest in tiftj HW years, fell here on the night of I the 7th instant. After a day of intense heat the clouds opened fe.nd the floods descended. The water literally fell in sheets, in [torrents, and figuratively it icame down as if the bottom had dropped out. Yet next morning the streets were dry and in r seventy-two hours were dusty. The sewers simply carried away the flood as by magic, and not a seam parted; not a tap choked. The system tar exceeds in efficiency the contract requirements. There is no malaria in the town and nothing else that can be attributed to lack of drainage or to filth. Come and see o Co., Kingstre AAAMVWMAMMAAAAAAVW VOTE BY COUNTIES For Solicitor in the Third Judicial Circuit. The race for Solicitor in the third judicial circuit was a pretty one and hotly contested from start to finish. After the first primary the two remaining candidates were so evenly matched that it was impossible to forecast intelligently the result. Mr Stoll being the younger man and not in possession of the office was at a disadvantage, to wbiob might be added the fact that for many years Williamsburg has never asserted her right to representation in the State government by putting out a candidate for any office, and all throogh the campaign Mr Stoll's defeat, even by many who supported him, was regarded as a foregone conclusion. But the splendid campaign made by Mr Stoll, supplemented by the enthusiastic and tireless work of his zealous and loyal friends, ! overcame all handicaps and Williamsburg's candidate was triumphantly elected. Yet the vote was so close that until every precinct in all the counties had been reported the issue was in doubt. Out of 7,136 votes in the circuit a majority of 130 is uncomfortably small. Sixty-six votes changed frou Stoll to McLaughlin would have meant McLaughlin's election. The vote by counties stands as follows: Third Circuit McLaughlin Stoll Clarendon 949 576 Lee 1,089 548 Sumter 791 985 Williamsburg 674 1,524 Total 3,503 3,633 A Freak Bet. Spartanburg, September 14.? Special: Election bets are now being paid. One of the freak bets made before the Senatorial election was that of S C Little, manager of John Gary Evans's headquarters. Mr Little wagered that if Smith beat Evans by over 20.000 votes he would leave the State. Mr Little will leave here to-morrow morning for parts unknown. As tiiere was no time limit in the wager it is thought that he will return within the next several weeks, though he may make his home indefinitely in the West.?News and Courier. 200 boxes crackers jut arrived, fresh aod good. With the bright sunshine streaming through the open doors and windows of the beautiful auditorium of the graded school, illuminating the happy faces of one hundred and eighty eight pupils, and to the strains of that grand old hymn, "Come, Thou* Almighty King," the session of 1908.1909 was auspiciously begun at 9 o'clock this morning# When the bell rang . a large number of patrons and interested spectators bad filled tie lower seats of the big auditorium, and without a moment's delay the various classes, headed by their respective teachers, Sled in and took their proper places. There was no confusion or disorder, and no crowding. With the building of the auditorium, with its three large class rooms above, the crowding and jostling of the children so noticeable on former like occasions has been entirely avoided and there is now a plenty of room for.alU While the pupils enrolled to-day number about i?? it is reasonably certain that by October 1 the enrolment will reach 275, and possibly 300. The board of trustees intend to make this school one of the very best in the State and if the enrolment warrants it they will provide an additional teacher. The roll of teachers has recently been jriven in this corresbondence, so O" * it will not be repeated here. The opening to*day was most auspicious and is an occasion of which every loyal resident of Kingstree is proud. Mr Colbert, the principal of the school, outlined his course in a plain, practical talk, which impressed his hearers as that of a man who understood his business and would see that it was properly attended to. The . work of the term has commenced: may it prove to be all that the friends of the school wish tor it,?Xewx and Courier, For prompt relief in cases of weak back, backache, inflammation of the bladder, urinary disorders, kidney troubles and rheumatic pains, there is nothing as good as DeWitt's Kidney and Bladder Pills.
