JULY 9. 1908. _____ _ Mr Yause seems to be perfectly willing to have a new bridge at j the canal. Perhaps he thinks that as long as the railroad crossing remains as it is his shop will not be idle. The editor of the News and Courier is to be congratulated on : his discovery, even at this late day (July 8,) that the vigorous cam- ' paign he has been conducting against Bryan's nomination is as 'the blind leading the blind," but the one mitigating circum stance connected with the whole affair which should assuage the anguish of his lashing conscience, is the fact, that whether blind or not, his following has not been great. If all the "oxen," etc., that have fallen into the ditch can find accommodation in seats re* served in the front row of the 1 Bryan baud wagou, not much harm has been done. All aboard, Mr. Editor, and your house, but what if many of them never were / blind ? Grovcr Cleveland. Our country now mourns the : death of one of its most distinguished citizens. He was the only living ex-President of this republic and the only Democrat who has been elected to that high office 6iuce the Civil War, and after an interval of four years, was elected the second time to this high position; It is thought that his election in both instances was due to his forceful and simple personality > rather than to political manipulation, but his second administration, owing to conditions for; which he was not responsible, brought him great unpopularity. The encroachment of a panic; caused largely by legislation with which he had nothing to do, developed during his second term much unfavorable sentiment against him. People get very serious over politics when trouble threatens their pocket books. His unwillingness to meet this shortage by the untested financial ideas of some of his own political party subjected him to much personal j dislike and vituperation, much of which was evidently unjust. ^ * i ' - - . i r _ nr? _ I Since nis retirement irom orace: twelve years ago he has conducted himself with such dignity and propriety as to secure a constantly increasing regard and esteem from discriminating people of all parties. The Summer School. As may be noted elsewhere, Kingstree is to be favored with a summer school this year, beginning July 27th and running to August 8th, and while it is designed especially for the benefit of the teachers, in better equipping them for their great work as the moulders of the lives of the not distant future citizenship of the country, at the same time, such a gathering in our midst,, ought to be frought with great ^ ] good to the town itself. These teachers doubtless come ] from the best homes in the county , l ~ WAt. k/.I.O nf {<iuu9 uj i lie na>j u\.'jcj mvot vt i them are yoimg ladies.) They are ' perhaps a representation of the j best that Williamsburg county has:; done in its system of education, many of them having been inspired to j ursue their studies elsewhere in our colleges, and are ( now come back, according to all the laws of evolutionary betterment, to lend a hand for the uplifting of others. They deserve ; and will doubtless receive a warm ; welcome in our town. A glance at the program shows many good things in 6tore for those who attend. Many of our youug people and older ones as well should attend tne daily sessions, much or which will be i given to lecture. %ncl discussions J of problems that t < concern to parents ll pupils. Our readers will observe that < our manner of writing is like the ! little school boy's composition: A ; young teacher somewhat nervous 1 1 over a temporary promotion was anxious that everything should go off in the usual good order. Instructing the class in composition 1 she said: "Now children, don't ! attempt any flight of fancy, just be yourselves and write what is real- . Ij in you." As a result of this advice one , c little boy turned in the following j1 composition: "I ain't goin'to at- ( temp no flight of fancy; I'm just jj goin' to write what's in me, and I got a hart, a liver, two lungs I I:I? ana some oiner luiugs unc uiai,: then I got a stummick, and it's < got in it a pickle, a piece of pie, ] two sticks of pepperment candy and my dinner." j That's the idea.
