The Senatorial Campaign, It would take a prophetic vis-! 1011 mutrcu ivj ui|? iuiv vw\. *?. tare far enough to discern upon whom will fall the toga of the | late Senator Latimer. We had thought all along that it would; be a difficult matter to name the winner, but uow, having heard the aspirants present their claims for the | office, we confess that we are in doubt more than ever. Talking with people from various sections, it seems that thej prevailing opinion in this county i *? flio fircf flivieinn will be! JO buat iuv uiov utf iwiv>* Evans, llhett and Smith, but in what order thej will come, opinions differ. Judging from appearances here and from reports from other meetings, Mr Smith has the , crowd with him in this section ( of the State, but we do not believe he will poll a big vote in the up-country, which, should it 4 unite on any candidate, will be able to elect him. Mr Smith's chances for election have been much euhanced bv the recent ad vance in the price of cotton, but then cotton is a very uncertain; commodity and is likely to play coquettish tricks at any stage of the game. The main argument against him by Mr Smith's opponents | seems to be: If he has helped the farmers bv his crusade against Wall street he should retain his present position; if he has uot' helped them he is not entitled to special consideration at their hands. Mr Rhett makes a tine appearance and exemplifies the business men. He is making a vigorous-' ' -? ?j. - 11? 1 campaigu anu win get a guuuij , ' number of votes. He is recog-!' nized as being a strong man throughout the State. However, he seems to be the target of all his competitors because he is a banker. Just why this should be the case, if in other respects! he be qualified for the office, we do not clearly perceive. The; banks have done more to build up the South, and moreover to furnish the farmers the "sinews j of war" to maintain their tight j against what Mr Smith terms 1 "Wall street" than any other, agency that they could command. | Take away the banks from the > country and we are in a sorry 1 plight indeed. Mr Evans is also no small j' factor to reckon with in this, contest He has a large follow- j ing and his argument is logical aud convincing. Mauy predict' that the man who beats John ... I1 ijary r.vans win oe ine next j Senator. Col Johnston is making a ( masterly plea as to why he should j be the preferred one and his eloquence is telling in its effect. , He may yet be a formidable ( factor iu the race. ] Col Lumpkin is a finished ora-' tor and bases his candidacy on , ^ straigtit out prohibition. If ail the prohibitionists in the State stick to him he will surely be ' elected?but will they? The personal equation enters largely into political nutters and (ol Lumpkin does not "mingle"' as well as do some of the other, candidates. Mr Martin seems to be regard ed as an uncertain quantity. It is iimllv supposable, however, that he will get into the second pri-1 mar v. Still he adds a lot of ginger to the campaign. Mr Grace seems to be the dark horse. In fact, the conclusion was that he bad withdrawn from the contest. His telegram, however, leceived here Monday, reassures his many friends and supporters. But he has lost a lot of n 'liable time. The selection of a candidate j for the high and honorable posi- j tion of United States Senator is a matter that should be weighed; - wisely and well by the people. His tenure of office is six Vrs and as he generally succeeds*!'. .* ; self, it practically means a ter?i % of at least twelve years. We have tried to give our impression of the men and their chances, without favor or prejudice, and it is for the voters to say whom they will choose. Doubtless a j number of our friends disagree with us as to the "sizing up" of the candidates, but that is our opinion and a newspaper that fears w express an opinion is no newspaper at all. The commencement season is; commencing to end. * Cut out of your platform the iucreased tax levy, Governor, aud you Will win in a walk. _ The only certainty about the: senatorial campaign is the uncer- j tainty as to the successful aspir-1 ant. If there are any dramatic sltua- j tions in the congressional cam j paign we predict that the star actors will be Messrs Ragsdale and Ellerbe. Georgetown gave Congressman Ellerbe ijuite an ovation, it is said, at the campaign meeting last Saturday. Congressman Elleibe has been very kind to Georgetown and he is entitled to their gvat-: itude. Georgetown county, we believe, polls nearly a thousaud votes when all the voters vote. Colleton county seems to be a fertile field for candidates, there being fifty-four announced in the! current issue of the Press and Standard, as follows: House of representatives, 4 ; Master, 2 : Sheriff, 8 ; Supervisor 6; Auditor, G; Treasurer, 2; Clerk of court, 4 ; Superintendent of education, 2; Coroner, S; County commissioner, 7; Magistrate, 5While we believe that Governor Ansel is entitled to a second term and that it will be given I him, we differ with him as to his j views on taxatiou. His idea of I raising the* State levy two mills' to meet the deficiency seems fallacious. Once put the State on x cash basis and our legislative! Solons would run riot in their 1 extravagance. No, the proper remedy for the evil of legislative ?xtravagance is the * exercise of: :he vjeto ppwer that is vested in J - i the chief inagistraje. We fail to see the wisdom of piling up taxes ad infinitum. DBf'IDE YOURSELF. T he Opportunity Is Here. Backrd by Kingstrees Testimony. Don't take our won) for ir.
