As a role, boys are not disposed to be overproud of their clothes, but a lad whose Sunday suit costs some ?40 and ia of so striking a character that it is considered unsafe for him to walk abroad in it alone might be excused for being a trifle "stuck up" in tMi connecti on. I et in London every Sunday there are teh boys who are thus expensively and brilliantly habited. They are the ten choristers belonging to his majesty's chapel in St. James' palace, and truly goTgeous are they when arrayed in their "state suits." Scarlet cloth i6 the foundation of the costume, and bands of royal purple between rows of heavy old lace are the adorning of it. Grandest of all, old lace ruffles are worn at the neck and wrists, but these are so valuable and difficult to replace that it must be a special occasion to warrant their being donned, white lawn bands beiDg substituted as a i it.: gcueitti ujiiig. A boy has to exorcise great care over his state suit, for it must last him three years, while his undress suit is replaced every eight months. The choir of this royal chapel is one of the historical institutions of Britain, and many of its old time customs, including the dress of the boys, are retained to this day. Some curious customs peculiar to St. James' choristers may be mentioned. The most interesting of these is the right of the head boy to demand a guinea as "spur money" from any officer entering the chapel wearing spurs. It is related that when Sir Arthur Sullivan was head boy the Duke of Wellington would always come to the chapel in his spurs in order to have the pleasure of paying the forfeit to his favorite chorister.?Pearson's Weekly. Hack Writers. The journeymen writers write almost all that almost all Americans read. This is a fact that we love to fool our elves about, we taiic aDout "literature/' and we talk about "hack writers," implying that the reading that we do is of literature. The truth all the while is we read little else than the writing of the hacks, living hacks?that i?, men and women that write for pay. We may bug the notion that our life and thought are not really affected by current literature, that we read the living writers only for utilitarian reasons and that our real intellectual life is fed by the great dead writers. But our hugging this delusion does not change the fact that the intellectual life even of most educated persons, and certainly of the mass of the population, is fed chiefly by the writers of our own time. Let us hope that the great writers of the past do set the standards whereby a few judge the writing of the present. But even if this be true it is still true also that the intellectual life of the American people is chiefly shaped by current writing.?Walter H. JPage in Atlantic.
