It was expected that there would be many changes in the Conference, bnt the Bishop handed out a numberjof surprises. Before reading the appoint, i ' ments the Bishop made a talk, .setting forth his reason for mak? - * - A. ing changes, lie said that no | one was reduced because of inefficiency, bat because he believed in rotation of the ministers both as to place and office. He thought it right that presiding ieiders should go back into the pastorate and make some new sermons and stay with theif families. The Bishop said he had had all the experiences of the pastorate and was not ] giving any appointments which > ^ he himself had not had. His talk was well received. The % Conference was in a spiritual condition, having just held an experience meeting. There were songs and witnessing, and when the Bishop arose to read the apfpointments the body was in a tender mood. The Bishop beg>ged all to take their work witb out complaint and do the best <jrork of their lives. The city ia intersected by many canals, which are spanned by nearly 300 bridges, and resembles Venice in the mingling of land and water, though it is considerably larger than that city. The canals divide the city, which is about ten miles in circumference, into ninety islands. The city of Venice is built on eighty islets, which are connected by nearly 400 bridges. The Venetians joined the Lombard league against the German emperor and in 1177 gained a great victory in defense of Pope Alexander III. over the fleet of war vessels headed by Otto, son of Frederick Baarbarossa. In gratitude for this victory the pope gave the Doge Ziani a ring and instituted the world .famous ceremony of "Venice Marrying the Adriatic Sea." In this ceremony the doge, as the chief ruler of Venice used to be termed* with appropriate ceremonies drop- 1 ped a ring into the sea every year in recognition of the wealth and tradecarried to Venice by the Adriatic. A Daily. "You are a* daisy," is used by ? Dickens in "David Copperfield" in the sense of calling a person a daisy in the way to express admiration and at the same time to laugh at one's credulity. Steerforth says to young Copperfield: "David, my daisy, you are so innocent of the world. Let me call you my daisy, as it is so refreshing to find one in these corrupt days so innocent and unsophisticated. My dear Copperfield, the . daisies of the field are not fresher , than you." As a Brother. ^ A certain curate was of a painful ly nervous temperament and in consequence was constantly mak- . ing awkward remarks?intended as ' compliments?to the bishop and others. Having distinguished himself in an unusual degree during a ' gathering of clergy to an afternoon tea at the bishop's palace, he was taken to task for his failings by a senior curate, who was one of his companions on the way home. "Look here, Bruce," said the senior decidedly, "you are a donkey. Why cannot you keep quiet instead of making your aw nine remarks? I took a long trip in hopes that the nhanare of ohmate might help me. I was away for three months but could see no change for the better.
