The **^^lr?ttftT;ali are now berng put on J the grotrrn? and work will bebe- j gun veryssbon. The Lake City Bottling Works, now in the "Bardin -store," will move to the building occupied by the Parmer & Merchants Bank, and of course the Bank will go into its handsome new structure on the corner. The Baptist church has se cored the vacant lot at the coral of King and Knight streets and will build thereon a parson. ' v V Mr J If Baxley was late getting his watermelons started , this vear, but he brought in some on the 3rd inst. Messrs A C Stewart and L M Belk have made a start in tbe canning business. The3T have put up some strawberries, beans and blackberries. Tomatoes, however, will be the main object of operations this year and they are securing all of this vegetable that they can. They are beginning in a small way as . an experiment, with the intention of enlarging their plant, should there be reasonable prospects of success. We have advocated a canning factory here' for several years because we believe that there is a tine opening for one at this place, the j center of one of the largest and : most successful trucking- districts of the State; and we sin-; cerely hope these gentlemen: will meet with such encouragement as will result in a largej and permanent plant. Mrs Mattie Fulinore and daughter, Eleida, returned Saturday night from New York, v * where they spent the three months last past. Messrs Willcox & Willcox and j Mr Mann of Florence, contem- i plate, we understand, opening a' law office here, and that Mrj Mann will spend two or three! days of each week at this place and the remainder of the timej -SUMffl :R GOES UP OUR PRICES I PANTS ,! Death claims another victim, j and tfnis time it is a vigorous young man of about twenty-two. I "Suuday afternoon Mr Brn I^ee,' the son of Mr <* Wash Lee, who $ lives near Messrs Chandler Bros' store about eight miles j west of this place and just with ! in Florence county, was found -dead in Mr iiaylis Kirby'-s to-! bacco field. It is said, upon j what seems good authority, that. .young Lee was .at Messrs Chand- j ler Bros'store drinking Saturday afternoon and Sunday1 morning fee was seem near Mr; Robert Johnson's and that he i was still drinking. From aM * the circumstances the conclusion is drawn that, becotrijr*! stupid from the effects of tfffC quor.be laydown in the tobab? field and -went .tosleep and thpt the fcenrdbke ileal of Sunday's fierce son did the rest. We are; informed this was the opinion, given fcy the physician at the inquest .and that the verdict of the jury was in accordance with the facts above stated. This is a very sad story to record and ^ would that we could be spared the recital. The father is a first j rate man. an honest, hard work-> ing and law abiding citizen, and [ upon him, no doubt the blow is a fearful one. And so far as we can learn the young man himself was not regarded as a bad fellow at alL but this time he made an awful mistake. Early Monday morning llr Sol Floyd died at his home a few miles from here. About a week ago he was stricken with paralysis and gradually sank until death came. Weare unable to obtain particulars as to his life history, family, etc., in time for this letter but hope to furnish these next week. Mr Floyd was in the prime of iife, being about forty-five years of age, and apparently of powerful constitu tlOu. Xie WcLa d. prujji CefcJ vc auu successful farmer and a good citizen. He belonged to the class that constitutes the very foundation of our civilization, the class that stands for honest labor, solid progress, law and order, truth and justice. He will indeed be missed, not only by his family, upon whom the loss is almost an overwhelming one, but by many others. In his life he touched the lives of not a few others, and all these feel his going away keenly. Now his life is rounded out and he sleeps well. Our popular dentist, Dr M D Nesmith, has returned from, the meeting of the Dental association, where he was on the programme to read a paper on "Crown and Bridge Work." W. L.
