Mrs North, mother of Mrs W E Severance of our town, died last Friday at her home iu Lanriuburg, N. C. The series of meetings which were held at the Baptist church twloe a dajr daring about four'een day*, closed Friday -night. The services were marked by splendid attendance, close attention and, to all ?- appearances, much real earnestness on the part of the hearers, as well as the preachers. The sermons of Dr Martin and Kev air msnop were characterized by sound reasonings that appealed to the thoughtful and deep spirituality that accompanies tipe faith. There were several additions to the membership of the chmch. The ordinance of baptism was administered Sunday by the pastor W L Bass, Esq , was in Kingstree Saturday on professional business and he made it his special business to take dinner at the new hotel and he certainly does not regiet doing so. Matters in connection with the uew school baildiog are uow developing rapidly. In the lingua Americana (with apologies to Delinas), those in charge have "gotten a move on" and are beginning "to hump themselves" at last. The contract for the sale of the bonds has been definitely closed and the bonds have been signed and will be delivered this week. The lot, as is well known, was secured several months ago. Mr C C Wilson of Colombia, who has been employed as architect, is uow working out the details of the plans and specifications, and as soon as completed the contract will be let. Tie dispensary was opened Thursday afternoon and there was a number of big "drunks" Saturday aud several disturbances and rows followed. Mr J J Morris returned home Saturday night from a trip of several days in lower Williamsburg betwteu Black and Santee rivers. W. L. B. Seen at Soitbs. Smiths, April 21:?Mrs W P Hazen of Workman spent several days here last week visiting friends. Mr T S Smith of Moore's X Roads is the guest of Mr W H Smith, of this vicinity. We are glad to report that work on the new school building near Mr J Smiley's will soon be commenced. When completed it will fill a long felt want. His new residence on Byrd street has just been completed, and no doubt that accounts for bis frequent trips visits to Char leston here lately. Drs 11 M Graham and W H Poston, who have been attending the Medical College of South Carolina, returned home Sunday for their vacation. Dr Bill Hicks, who has been atteuding the same college, stopped over a few days with Dr Graham on his way home at New Zion. Scranton's rum shop has reopened. after being closed for the past two months and it is said to be full of good spirits. Mrs D Lamar Lee and son, Barnwell, returned home Saturday night after a pleasant visit to Adams Run, S. C. Miss Alma Gause of Cowards was noted in town one day last week. Mr Winslow Wright, who has been confined to his bed for several days with rheumatism, is gradually improving. It will be of intetest to our readers to know that the Atlantic Coast Line has 'perfected arrangements for a most convenient train service to Norfolk on account *of the Jamestown Exposition. This new service will become effective on Monday, April 2?th, continuing throughout the Exposition. Train No. 80, leaving at 8 30 a m, will make connection with train No. 48 from Wilmington arriving at Norfolk at ft 10 p m daily. This train will be equipped with parlor carservice from Jacksonville to Norfolk via Rocky Mount. A new train will be put on connecting with train No. 50, leaving at 6 26 pm, arriving at Norfolk at 7 30 a m. This train will carry through Pullman cars from Atlanta via Augusta; from Port Tampa and from Wilming ton. N. C. Returning t*-ain will leave (Norfolk as follows: 6 40 p m, connecting with train No 85 at So. Rocky Mount for all points South, Train No 49 will leave Norfolk at 8 ilOa m, connecting with train No 89 at Rocky Mount. Train No *91 leave Norfolk at 3 20 p m.
