Mr Patrick Cask ins, who held the position of saleman with J M Parker, has resigned and gone to Anderson to engage it , business. ^ Mr M R Matthews, who is attending the S. Carolina Medical ^Uege, at Charleston, spenl '^Tsffaas vacation in Scrantor vicinity. ^ DrC H Pate has had his cottage on Main street painted which greatly enchances the ap { pea ranee of his home. Mr George Cusaac is having a six room dwelling erected on his lot on Main street. The Christmas tree at the ^ Baptist church Christmas nighl was a success in every particular. A great variety of presents was distributed, gladdening the hearts^f the lucky recipients. jgyTfog Mary J Parrott, who lived near town, was found dead in bed last Saturday morning. She bad been in feeble health t for some time, and it is supposed she died of hemorrhage of the lungs. Her remains were interred at High Hill cemetery ^"Sunday atternoon in the pres fence of a large concourse 01 relatives and friends. Rev Mr Henry, of the Methodist church, r conducted the funeral services. *\ Mr J P Nelson has bought the ^Mercantile business of Mr ^ieorge fJ^Cusaac, and is now merchandising on a larger Ijsarale. Mr Nelson is also conTempiating doing a job printing business, which will be a new enterprise in town. Monday morning, at 1:15 'clock, a fire broke out in the tore of Wilson McCullough & lo., a little shop kept by legroes next to the drug store >f Dr W L Wallace. It rapidly ommunicated to the drug store .nd thence ti the old liarr Hotel, ?ccupied by J 1' Wheeler. The lames swept that whole side of >f the street from the hotel on he court house square to Jail treet, burning-, ' in all, four mildings. The houses were old rame structures and burne# ilrA tinder, and but for tile ,rood work of the bucket brig,rade much furthec damage vould probably have resulted. The owners of the burned build" ngs are as follows: Hotel building", R J McCabe, oss ?1,500; insurance ?1,000. Drug store, Dr Wallace, loss ncluding building, stock of Irugs, library and instruments, ;1,600; insurance ?1,150. Wilson McCullough & Co, egro store, and the corner store uilding, also occupied by legroes, W T Wilkins, owner, oss ?1,200; insurance ?650. We are unable to learn ehether or not the occupants of >f these two buildings carried livui aavv* The burnt district will soon be uilt up again with modern uildiigs in keeping with the pirit of new Kingstree. The origin of the fire seems to e a mystery, the current piniom being that it was caused >y rats and matches or from ome other accidemtal source. KILLED BY TIE TRAIN. atal Accident Near Rallread Station Monday Afternoon. Monday afternoon, as the rain from Charleston, No 50, ras approaching the.water talk everal hundred yards below he station, a colored man amed Austin Hines was struck y the locomative and fatally ljured. Hines was formerly employed y the company as cook on a laterial train and has been iving here for about two years, eing, it is said, originally from forth Carolina. He was about bout 55 years old and had no elatives.
