In 1846 the State of Maine, dissatisfied and disgusted with the saloons aud distilleries that were overrunning and cursing the State, passed a prohibition law for the entire State. In 1851 they passed what has come to be known as the "Maine Law.'' The vote for it was 18 to 10 in the senate and 80 to 40 in the house. Maine had been drinking up every twenty years f.n amount equal to the entire taxable property of the State. Every time the peopb* have voted on it since then they have sustained the law by overwhelming majorities. Ju 1884 the legislature of the State submitted a tconstitutional amendment prohibiting the manufacture aud sale of liquor in the State. It was a great battle. The vote .was .70,783 for the amendment and .13,811 against it Every county in trie State gave a majority for it. Some eminent opimons on the law Ke as follows: \ Senator Hale: Maine people believe in prohibition because they are ever)^ day witnesses to its good effects^ Senator Frye: I can aud do,from my own, personal observation, unhesitatingly affirm that the consumption cpf intoxicating liquors iu Maine is notX one-fourth so great as it was twenty ?vears ago. Maine is prospering under her law. NorJi Carolina)wants a State law? an amendment prohibiting liquor in the State. We ai\o ready for it.Now is the time to striky*. Dr J J Hall, of l^ayetteville, who lived for several years in Maine under the State prohibition law, and helped to get constitutional prohibition for the Piue Tree State, says of the movement for State orohibi lion in North Carolina: "Every good citizen should appreciate the position the governor has^aken. The idea that we should wait foPthe opportune time is delusive. Someone might have objected to Go'Q Almighty issuing the Ten Commandments. by saying: 'The world was not then ready for such laws.' Th&re must be a standard for such righteousness. Piohibitioa is the standard upon the liquor question."?N. C. Baptist. Fnr SalR nr Rpnf.
