As we predicted, the Weekly r" Mail's fancied advantage from discing the "money side" of the distary question question has turned to be a boomerang and we are .ot surprised at the reluctance with whir>k nnr mntomnnmrj remirs to the subject. As wa? stated 111 our reply to the Mail's first article ou r*.v ."The Money Side" we deprecated going into that phase of the subject, but, in jnstice to our side we could not allow our friend's reckless estimates, illogical inferences and misleading statements to pass unchallenged. The ReJcord's two points remain uncontroverted, viz: (1) That the voting out of the dispensary will not necessitate an increase of more than one mill in the s[i. * ' present levy. (2) That the towns of Kingstree, Lake City and Scranton, sharing equally with the country people the one-half of the dispensary profits ?a ?nrn froacnrtr lliai gUCS 1I1WJ mc vvuutj iiivwiHtji amounting to $7,178.59, get the other half divided among the three towns. Of this half of the total revenue, amounting to$7,178.59, the ' country people do not get a cent. And in this connection we may ask I out of whose pockets comes the bulk of the money from which the dispensary profits accrue, the town people's or the country people's? This is a hard question for our astute contemporary, hut since nothing would do but to drag the "money side" into the discussion, let us get at the facts. The assertiou that the coantry peoi - -. pie get as much or more of the dispensary profits than the towns do is too ridiculous to be worth serious / consideration. Our friend admits that he can see but one side to this question and that is the weak point in his argument. An editor who can see but one side of a question generally pioves hurtful instead of helpful to the side he attempts to advocate. The Mail tells us that the $12,237.60 derived from the dispensaries tan be used and *ve shall still have saud-hills and mud-hotei in the roads and poor schools for the children. That is undoubtedly true. But if the $75,000 or $80,000 that Have WE HAVE THEM A! Ever Brought to This ( CAN SUIT THE MOST F - < Vf OVEf IN CAR LOAD LOTS THI In Oi annually goes out of the county to ' get this $12,237.60 were applied to road-working ami school-building our high-ways would be turn-pikes aud our school-houses tilings of | beantv, and the people would be 110 poorer, but really far better off for beiug deprived of the stuff that destroys the body and kills the soul. The murder of Mr Julian Wilson last Friday night at Cooper postI -a* f ii. 1 .1. . _i omce was one 01 T,ne most snocMugly brutal [crimes in the annals of Wiiliamsburg county and it is perfectly natural that there should be a cry for speedy vengeance upon the perpetrators of the foul deed. At the same time we are glad that the efforts of Solicitor Wilsonand Sheriff Graham, backed up by the support of men of cool judgment, were successful in averting a lynching on. Saturday night. Such a catastrophe would have been most unfortunate iu adding another triumph of uiob violence to the already long list chalked up against Williamsburg county. If the parties arrested be proved guiltv no power on earth can save their necks; but if it turns out that there is not sufficient evidence to convict them their lynching would have been a terrible blot on our county. All honor to our brave and manly solicitor, John Wilson, who pleaded with the crowd to let the law take its course, and to our worthy and fearless sheriff, whe^ - -J ! ! ? ? ? ?? /] A^A?%(IA Kl J BIOUU IlKC it tUUIV 111 UC1CU3C ui mo prisoners; and no less credit is due to the men who stood with them for law and justice, especially the sons and other relatives of the murdered father and kinsmen. The crime committed is horrible to contemplate, but it would certainly not help mat ters to string up the suspected ones without trial. Give the law a chance. Now we know how it was done. Lieutenant General Clayton has l^t the cat out of the bag. He admits that if the people of Florence had been left alone, "the dispeusaryi would hare been voted out three to one." Here is | the secret of success: A child | is born in the neighborhood, the attending physician gets ?10, the editor give? the loud-lunged youngster and the "happy parents" a send-off and gets ?0. It is christened; the minister gets $10, and the editor $00. It | grows up and marries; the edi! tor publishes another long-wind led flowery article and tells a dozen lies about the ''beautiful and accomplished bride," the minister gets $10 and a piece of cake, and the editor gets $000. In the course of time it dies, and the doctor gets from $25 to $100, the minister perhaps gets another $15, the undertaker gets from $50 to $100; the editor pub) i s h e s a notice of the death and an obituary two columns long, iodge and society resolutions, a lot of poetry and a free card of thanks, and gets $0,000. No wonder so many country editors get rich!
