We are' glad to learn that the loss was paid in full bv the insurance company on i October 6. The Bank of Kingstrpc in its > quarterly statement published in j this issue makes an admirable show-J ing?the best, wo believe, it has ever j made. ' ? We have it from a reliable source that the ACL people have determined to remove the depot from its present site to the crossing and that work oil the new station building will commence in the near future. This will be a great convenience to ! the public generally and it is to be hoped that the change of location will soon bo effected. Charlie MoClary, a thrifty and well-co-do colored farmer at Lensou post-office, had his dwelling burned last Saturday. The origin of the tire is not definitely known but it is supposed to have been caused by rats striking matches. The house was probably worth $500 and the owner, we learn, carried several hundred dollars insurance. It now costs us to issue The Record more then double what it aid two years ago. Printing material, printers' wages, rent, labor and everything else on the expense list has gone up from 25 to 100'per cent. The price of subscription is all that has not gone up. That remains the same, one dollar. Now don't yon think you realy ought :o pay it? A number of newspapers in the Srate are raising the price of subscription from $1.00 to $1:50 a year, the cost of living and the expense of publishing a paper having increased at least 50 per cent. We have found it impracticable in the present conditions to more than clear expenses and the price of this paper will prob ably be advanced to $1.50 a year in the near future. Now is the tiuie to pay up and get a year ahead before the price is raised. Mraud Mrs Vibert W Graham of Beusou, who have been spending the Bummer in Asheville, returned home Monday. By means of a safety Bwitch the train was saved, but the engine went over a 60 foot enbanknient and was wrecked. The engineer and fireman saved themselves by jumping and thanks to the safety switch none of the passengers was hurt. The cotton fields in many sections have been ravaged by the "army" worm and other insect pests so that the plants are stripped bare of foliage. The worms have even attacked the leaves of trees adjoining cotton fields. The annual reunion of Co. G, 15th o r\ it 4?1. of ti Oi L. V LUU(\ piiM;c i. ucouaj 01/ Jill (liautown church. We have uot been furnished with a report of the meeting, but have no doubt that it was in keeping with former similar occasions when the camp-tires were re- j lighted and the "boys of 'til" lived j over in memory the scenes and incidents of bivouac and battle-field. Out of 1200 subscribers on our list nearly one-half that number owes us one dollar or more on subscription. Unless we collect these subscriptions in the near future we cannot continue publishing the paper. As we do not ease to shut up shop yet awhile we make this appeal, which, after a reasonable time has elapsed without a response, will be followed by-a personal request to each individual who owes us. If any hyper-sensitive" souls do not care to receive a "dun" let them pay up and we shall be glad to escape the necessity of bestowing this little attention. -v & '; , Wlb.# \ 1 If baby's health is dear to you,; Theu let me tell you what to do Ere pain has racked its tender frame, Just let 4,TEETHINA" ease the same. . . Third: Never speak well of your merchants nor their stocks, and if you need goods and can pay for them, go to a neighboring town for them. (Now if you are not prepared to pay cash and cau buy a few things that you never expect to pay for, such dealing at home is permissible to a limited extent.) Fouth: If you need insurance,; fire, life, or accident, be sure and not take it from your own home agent, but wait until some fellow comes along whom you never saw before and in all probability will never see again. Give him your business, thus keeping all the money you possibly can away from your town and community. Finally: Kick against ever}7 enterprise that may be started in your town.
