THE FATHER OF HIS COUNTRY. A Belated but Interesting- Account of the , Celebration of Washington Natal Day. (Written for last weeft.) ^ Venters, March 7:?Although ' the weather was very unfavor-I, able a large number of friends :, and patrons assembled at the Graded School, Venters, S. C.,|! where quite an interesting- and j( instructive programme rendered , J i? ii. ~ J?i uy tuc siuucuis hi nuuui ui ] Washington's birthda}'. Fol- ? lowing is the entire programme: Introductory, by Miss Bessie 1 Huggins. 1 Washington's Birthday, by t Miss Eva Venters. r Song, America. 1 The Birthday of Washington, 1 by Ettrick Huggins. s Washington, by five little girls, a Our Flag, by Eady May Huggins. s Our Washington, by Miss t Feasy Cox. t How Did Washington Look? t by Caesar Haselden. f Song, Star Spangled Banner. t Our Hero, by Nellie Davis. Song, Red White and Blue. The Nurse of Liberty, by Ola Spring. Tributes to Washington, by nine boys. w Memory of Washington, by ^ Miss Hattie Newell. is Tea Party in Washington's u Time, by six girls. tl Boston Tea Party, illustrated ' si by six boys t, While the programme was ;f carried out without a single prompting, deserving much , praise, perhaps the most interesting feature was the six boys ^ dressed as Indians, with feathers and paint in true aboriginal j style, representing the "Boston I Tea Party." They rushed on the i stage with a yell, such as only ! a hearty school boy can give,! ' which sounded so genuine that! ^ it made us almost imagine a few , f "Choctaws" were upon us. I h< +hp PYPrrisps Rev W M I '* ' - I w Harden came forward making- a I short, pointed talk, and closed j by reading a few appropriate! selections from some of our il-1 lustrious poets on the character ! of Washington. lie Then followed Hon H E Eaddy f ("The Sage of Possum Fork") who with his ready wit and soimd logic, kept the audience charmed. <Prof S H Brown, the principal closed by making a short, appropriate ta*k on the growth and progress of the school, impressing upon the patrons the a necessity of co-operation in or- t der to secure the future pros- * nf flip school. It was U Bon Ami. t, , - !<L. J. STACK LEY'S 1 ICE CREA'Vl GARhEN. a . We are prepared to serve \ all kinds of summei drinks at | Soda fountain. Gardener's: fruit svrups used only. Some one evideutlv j> >sessing more >f the sentimental thought of tin :ime8 than material an J logical jpiiit tha lives after the otlur is lead, graced an article in the Florence Times, which was produced n The County Kecokd of March ), with elaborate, uncredited quotaion from the Demorest Medal Cones! recitations and backed the bought expressel therein by renindiug the reader (as if it were iever known before) that there were wo sides to every question aud that ome argument from the dispensary .dvocates should be forthcoming. The di-peusary element, with the trength of three-fourths of the voers of the town proper aud nineenths of the people of Scranton disriet, have no desire to enier into a urtber controversy of tbe merits of he dispensary's operation here and fill not dignify with further notice ny statement emanating from the pposition after this, outside of the ourts, to which tribunal the quesion is now referred to be settled nee for all. But passing by the lagiaristic contents of "X X X's" ?tter, the facts remain th it there is law in South Carolina by which lcoholic liquors may be sold legally; bat this law has been complied with i every detail in connection with s operation here, and that the shoe > pinching the toe of the opposition ecanseall efforts to destroy the id and power of the majority have een and are proving futile, and tbis i better shown in the wailings of an liskillfu! minority who have neither le power of common justice nor the ipport of truth to defend a posiou as unwisely taken as w is the urney of Napoleon to Moscow. Prof. Brown is an able ^ instructor, and by his quiet, unassuming manner has won\his ^ way to the hearts of the people n oi me community. All persons present expressed j themselves as being- highly 11( pleased, and the exercises re-! c fleeted great credit upon Prof, jBrown, Miss Cora Huggins, his assistant, and the students. n The school as a whole made a fine appearance, and seemed to be under perfect control. We ^ venture to say there is no better 3 and larger school anywhere in the country, no better teachers, and no better work than is done here. ^ Mr William Cooper, county superintendent of education, paid a visit to the school a few n days ago, which was very much f( appreciated. His talk to the scholars was quite instructive. Lit writes that Bucklen's Arn?ca 11v?* wholly cured :t in five days. ?r Ulcers, Wounds, Piles, it's thrust salve in tin- world. Cure >fuaruteed.
