The people of Kingstree have i seen fit to elect me, without so-; licitation on my part, to the po- , sition of intendant of this town, and I thank them for this unsought honor. Their action in this election indicates that they have some confidence in me, and it shall be my endeavor, as far as circumstances shall per mit, to serve them in a way that will show my appreciation of their good opinion. I accept the position fully realizing that 1 I am to receive no reward for my services, but perhaps con- demnation. But with duty as 1 my guide and the welfare of the 1 town and its people as my goal I shall go forward with the 1 other members of the council in an effort to conduct the muni- 1 cipal affairs in a progressive, ^ business-like and economical way. I have no promises to 1 make, and can only in a general ] way assure my icuow tmscus i that I shall perform my duties 1 as best I can when all the circumstances are considered. \ Respectfully, j Chas W. As there seems to be doubt in he minds of a good many as to j he time when our next term of j :ircuit court meets, it will per- , laps be of public interest to give he date. Court will convene on i donday, April 18, and will be in i ;ession two weeks, if so much ime be necessary. This date ; uay be relied upon as correct. \.n act was passed at the last ession of the General Assembly hano-inir the tirrif* for the hold r. ?ft ng of our courts', but that act loes not -go into effect until V-ugust 1st, 1904, consequently >ur spring and summer terras or this year are not affected, rat remain as fixed by the act )f 1903. The summer term will >e held June 27. Having had several inquiries ibout the public school libraries ict. which was passed at there cent session of the General As-: sembly, I think that it will be of general interest to give the subsfanrp r?f that law Omittiticr details, the act provides that whenever the patrons of a public school raise $10, the county board of education must contribute $10 and the State board $10 for the purpose of establishing a library for such school. This money, $30 in all,is then used by the trustees of the library in buying books, which books must be selected from a list adopted by the State board. Not more than twelve such libraries may be established in any county in any one year, and the county board must designate the schools for which libraries may be established during each year, rhat is, if the patrons of more than twelve schools raise the specified amount, $10, the county board shall declare which h\rohro ctinll criv??n lihrnri#?K L.1.W.V, * One library may exchange books with another, but changes shall aot be made oftener than once in six months. These are, I believe, the leading features of the act. Editor Wolfe was in our town bright and early Monday morning. The truckers are getting in quantities of crates and cups preparatory to the opening of the strawberry season. Mr N L Overstreet has pur:hased the lot between Mr J H Blackwell's and Mr E W Yates' residences. When a young lady goes to work for herself she usually revives an invitation to knock off and keep house, and we notice that the invitation is very often accepted. The news of the death of R Means Davis was received here with genuine sorrow. A good many of our people knew him personally, and all by general repute. The writer feels that in Prof Davis'going away he has lost one of his best friends and most highly respected teachers. Prof Davis was one of God's aoblemen, a gentleman and a scholar. Mr J C McElveen says he wants to extend his hearty thanks to the people of this town ind community tor tne spienaia patronage they have given him since he came among us. He is gratified?almost surprised. He ^ught not to be. In the first place The Record gave him a jood "send-off" when he opened up. Again, when a first rate man, a straight-as-a-shingle fellow like Cleve McElveen comes to this place all the people are gflad and give him their encouragement and that in no uncertain manner. In what respect is The County Record like wine? Improves with age. (We may be pardoned for suggesting that it is well re(a)d; that it exhilarates without intoxicating; that it takes work to produce it; that it is a luxury and ofttimes a necessity, and finally, that, as "in vinoveritas," there's truth in itPrinter's Devil). W. L. B. Card of Thanks. The family of the late Mr J S Howie desire to express our hearty thanks to all our friends and neighbors for their many kindnesses shown us during the illness of the one who has gone 3 way. We assure them that we appreciate their tender assistance and comfort. L. H. Howle, For the family. Lake City, S C., March 12,1904. !
