f " I 'Young women may avoid much sictaess and pain, says Miss Ahna Pratt, if they will only have faith in the use of Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound. Judging' from the letters she is receiving froaj so many young girls, Mrs. Pinkham believes that our girls are often pushed altogether too near the limit of thrir endurance nowadays in our public schools and seminaries. Nothing is allowed to interfere with studies, the girl must be pushed to the front and graduated with honor; often physical collapse follows, and it takes years to recover the lost vitality.? often it is never recovered. Y.: Gentlemen?I heartily wish those who are suffering from baekacbe and disttirbed action of the kidneys would try Doan's Kidney Pills. As was the case with me. they will be more than surprised with the results. I had been troubled for years with my spine. 1 could not lie dn eitl>or side. Spinal erauips would follow, and words could not explain the agony which I would endure. While in these cramps I could not speak or move, but by making a great effort after the cramp had left me 1 could begin to speak and move a little, but my whole back was so sore and lame that I could not even have the back bathed for some time. My nerves were in a terrible state. 1 would rather sit up at night than go to bed, dreading the cramps and the terrible backaches. I consulted physicians, but got only a little relief for the time being. Seeing your advertisement, my mother urged me to try Poans Kidney Pills. After using one box I was better, and have ever since been on the gain. 1 have no backache and no cramps now. and I feel like a new person. My nerves arc better and I know my blood is purer. Words cannot express my thanks to you for what Doan's Kidney Pills have done for me. According to an article in the Cincinnati Commercial, a fifty-one pound stone was recently found in that city secreted :n a bale of hay oi" eighty pound-. This is not as had as finding a lump of lead of nearly one-half the weight of t lasolid gold watch case secreted in the centre of tiie case. Gold watch cases are soid by weight, anu no one can see where this lead is secreted until the springs of the case are taken out and the lead will be found secreted behind them. These cases are made by companies who profess to be honest, but furnish the means to tho dishonest to rob the public. It is not pleasant for anyone to find that he lias lugged a lump of lead in his watch ca.-e. Another trick of the makers of spurious solid gold watch cases is to stamp the case "1'. IS. Assay.'' The United States does not stamp any article made out of gold and silver except coin, and the fakir, by using this stamp, wants to make the public believe that the Government hnd something to do with the stamping or guaranteeing the fineness of watch cases. Another trick of the watch fakir is to advertise a watch described as a solid gold filled watch with a twenty or twentv-nvcyear guarantee. These watches are generally sent C. O. D.. and if the purchaser has paid for the watch he finds that the company which guaranteed the watch to wear j* not in existence. The Ducber-Hampden Watch Company, of Canton, Ohio, who are constantly exposing these frauds, will furnish the names of the manufacturers who are in this Questionable business. BALTIMORE RALLIES Desolated City Puts Up a Bold Fight For Rebuilding FIRMS GETTING READY TO REOPEN The Property Loss Hardly As Qreat As at First Estimated ? Outside Assistance Appreciated Aut In No Case Asked For and Not Needed. An incident that inspired the whole community with tremendous confidence was the resumption of business by the banks, deposits being received and i hecks honored in the usual way. It would be difficult to estimate the volume of transactions in this respect, but according to the leading bankers it was gratlfyingly large in view of existing conditions. The knowledge that Baltimore's torm !nol fonilitioc oro into/.t nml tKot grain elevators were not Involved in the fiery tornadn^also served to promote a popular conviction that the situation is not so dark as it has heretofore appeared. Indeed the optimistic feeling is manifestly growing that the calamity, though harrowing in every detail, will give the city an opportunity to re-adjust itself on new and more modern plans and that a new city of imposing grandeur is to rise from the ruins of the old. The progress which has been made ! in the work of clearing the debris fromv the streets in the burned district seems almost magical. Baltimore street, which at sunrise was a confused mass of rubbish. is practically clean, and likewise South street, one of the great banking thoroughfare. Hanover street, near where the fire started, was made passable for wagons, and Pratt street, a long avenue of trade, is clear of encuml\r?jnooo oil 4KrA??V\ TKo /vSiw vtumvo M| utc no; iui uugn, iuc viw; l engineer's department, the building in- ' spector and the street cleaning department. all worked in conjunction. No attempt was made to do more than to clear the streets from curb to curb, the debris being piled high on the sidewalks and back of the building line. Many dangerous walls which overhang the streets were pulled down. The most ambitious attempts at razing walls were on Liberty and Lombard ! streets. At each of these places there ? are hoisting engines with wire cables, *, which are fastened to a section of the J toppling walls and then wound upon J on the spools. The Hurst building in which the first started was pulled down. All through the financial district , preparations are being made to open , sares and vaults. Those or'the German , Bank and the German Fire Insurance Company were opened end the cash and books taken out uninjured. The j vault of the Marine Bank was opened , i; and found intact. In no instance have the content" of any vault been seri- i ously damaged. < . The chamber of commerce has been 1 I exceedingly active in sending broad- 1 [ cast to every center of trade in this J country and Europe the assurance that , Baltimore is even now in condition to transact all shipping, grain and foreign ( trade, and that all other lines of busi- t ness will be restored to their normal , channels within the next two or three months. The officials of the chamber of commerce announced that plans are ' already nearly completed for the re- , building of their $600,000 structure. , Many merchants and manufacturers i whose places of business were swal- i lowed tip in the conflagration have 1 signed contracts for rebuilding and ' there are on all sides the greatest signs of activity in this respect. All are simply waiting for the city to clear > the streets of debris and give permis- ' sion to the owners of the ground to ' take possession. The matter of accept lng aid from other cities, has not yet been finally decided upon, according to Mayor McLane. The fire did not reach 1 the residential section of the city and there is no actual destitution at this < time. The indications are that the eifczens of Baltimore will be fully able to 1 take care of all cases of want that might present themselves. The mayor ' feels grateful for the many proffers of { aid from the citizens of this country f and from foreign lands. The following was received from the t Pope: t His Holiness, deeply moved by the J news of the great calamity which has ' recently visited the city of Baltimore, ( desires your excellency to convey to , the honorable mayor and the people 1 of Baltimore his sincere sympathy. He t prays that they can stand the severe ? loss their city has suffered and that it will continue to progress. (Signed.) "CARDINAL MERRY DEL VAL." Tho leading savings banks in the | city combined in a public announce- . ment last week that none of them have suffered any loss of securities by the 1 fire, and that fhey are in as good condition financially as ever and that they i will be open for business February J 15tb. 1 A composite estimate of the total loss < from the fire by 25 expert representa- < tives of leading insurance componies outside Baltimore places the figures at $85,000,000. Some of them think that the total loss will be reduced to $70,000,000, as much salvage is being due out of the ruins which was thought to have been destroyed. The loss to the insurance companies is estimated by the some experts at 73 per cent, of the total loss. Telegraphic Briefs. The larger rolelr flouring mill and I grain elevator of Cannon.
