For some ' tiraey without noise or excitement, several of our leadiug business men bare been working up an oil mill with'the result that last week, before we went to press, enough capital had been subscribed or was available to build and e<] uip a twenty ton cotton oil mill* and a modem fjsCcln of gins. f?&r. - It. is useless to argue the benefit 1 of such an enterprise to oar town and county. Year after year enough cotfon seed has been shipped oat of the onanty and bought again by the farmers in the shape of meal and f jnilla^r the freight alone to pay a fair dividend on the capital invested \ ' in an oil mill. In addition to this ft will bring the consumer and the producer together and keep at home thousands of dollars that have gone elsewhere* to help build up other towns and counties. Jn'ow that the projeet has taken business shape we are informed that the promoters will soon make application for a charter in order that no time may be lost before commencing work on the building, in order that it may be completed and the * machinery in place by the opening Ui IfUV UVA V vvvwu wmvv... Five Dollars Reward. Tht? inquiry of ."School Boy" concerning the history of the Confederate flag tonches upon a subject of vital interest to every true Southerner ana especially to us who lire in the .proud commonwealth that first declared for State sovereignty and the right to lecede and set up a govern i. u__ ' OlOUV W U? WW II. . The atorr of the Confederate flag-^-Che- emblem of the Lost Cause?whose folds were ensan gained by the blood of our heroes on 'M hundred battle fields in the long sad bloody struggle that followed secession, should be familiar to every boy and girl in our schools; but the innocent inquiry of "School Boy" indicates a sad lack of knowledge on this most important subject. Ia his letter our young friend {fades the blame where it justly belongs. "In only one history," he says, "can he tind anything at all about the flag/' and that information seems to consist only of a small cut without satisfactory information as to the significance of its design. And yet we boast of using in our chicle text books by Southern authors! .. .How many children of the aver^wre achool age know anything at all . %jbout j tfye Confederate flag? Because of his refusal to grant the - * ? j i __ r application ior nail mauc uy lormer Lieutenant Governor James 11 Tillman through his counsel public opinion is pronounced in approval of Chief Justice Y J Pope. The hearing, which was continued from Newberry, took place in Columbia last Thursday and numerous affidavits were introduced to show, on the one hand, that the killing of Editor Gonzales was done in cold blood and with malice; and on the other hand, that Tillman acted in self-defense, believing that his life was in jeopardy. Under the law and the evidence it is generally agreed that Tillman could not have been admitted to bail; yet there were many who freely predicted that bail would be granted. In this case the newly elected Chief Justice had au opportunity to rise above partizan feeling and he has shown himself equal to the occasion. The ruling of the Chief Justice does not imply that Tillman will be found guilty of murder; that is a question for the jury to decide. Jt does mean, however, that the sucnoaa/te lamented MrTviT is not VtO?VI IV VIIV - unmindful of the grave responsibility of the high office he holds nor of the traditions handed down by a long line of distinguished predecessors.
