IUUO. ? 11* ft. l-i. - i- - - - . Prospect and Retrospect. Casting s retrospective glance over the past twelve months our people, both of town and county, find much cause for congratulation. Compared . with last year this time the- county is in a prosperous condition and the people are full of hope and energy born of qpnfidence in the future. The farmers of the comity have made good crops geuer" -l! A 1 V1_J ?1 4-,. ^mauy, wnicn uuts eiiiiuiru tucux w flszeet their obligations and. left more less surplus. Some who fell beS^Bkind las* year have paid out in full ^Ppid once more are experiencing the pleasant sensation of being out of debt This state of .things is extremely gratifying to ns all aud all the more so when we contrast the present oandktous with those that obtained /a year agor Erery week or two ' last L fall a merchant went into bankf ruptcy and his place of business was closed. These bankrupt stocks being thrown on the market caused an unnatural and unhealthy condition of trade and resulted in ruinous competition. The Bank of Kingstree was just * organized and there were those who ? i t il:i i 1 .1 pretucuxi mat nere was auuuier jncdeetinate failure. Compare this condition with that of the present. All of our merchants have enjoyed a fine trade this fall and not a single business faliure has ^ been reported. The Bank of Kingstree, whose untoward fate was lamented in advance, has grown to be a lusty financial stripling and its stock is selling away above par. Its net earnings amounted to 18& per cent at the close of the first year of its existence, as fine a showing or finer than any similar institution in the State with the same amount of litah stock. The outlook for Kingstree seems '>?/ brighter than ever before. New buildings are going up and others are being planned. Before the next _^seaaon opens we are promised one tobacco warehouse1 in town and possibly two. We are also led to believe that ere another new year comes around we shall have a new school building that will be an J$ ornament to the town and a credit to - - v riOriZ onr county. " This is truly "a consuo&r mation devoutly to be hoped." *r? The town has now a great opportunity ta go forward; let us sta^d shoulder to shoulder and "seize the day." Pulling in different directions has too often exhausted our energies and neutralized our efforts for advancement. In the language of of D'Artagnan let us henceforth be "one for all and all for one," and let that one be Kiogstree. Men should not lear death; they 'should (ear life. X N. DISPENSARY PROFITS. ; Annual Report of State Di?pensary j Soun to he Made. The annual report of the State j dispensnrv will soon be made, J and the ex iel figures as to Ihe ' State's bi^ liquor luisine-s will be giveil l??r 'he year ju-t ended. In ronn'1 figures it i- stated t)i: the report will show that the J business ha- paid $550,000 to the counties, towns and cities and the , ?chool fund this venr, over $400,000 of this having been paid over to the counties towns and cities. The total amount of profits paid to the school fund is about $140,- 1 000, this including the last three quarterly payments required bv 1 the new act. The volume of business for the I year is considerably larger than i that ot last year. The experts who have been examining the books, accounts and all affairs of the dispensary under the act requiring such examina- ; tion to be made have not yet filed meir repon wun me governor to be transmitted to the general assembly. ... The institution ended the year with its accounts more thoroughly , balanced up than for some years.' ( Nineteen Bale* on Thirteen Acres. | Speaking ol good farmers and ' productive soil we have Ion;: maintained and herebv iterate the claim that in both these respects 1 Williamsburg is exceeded bv tew ' counties of the State. If the soil 1 and resources of Williamsburg ' county were exploited as they should be it would become a i Mecca for home-seekers and investors. Here is a case in point as to the fertility of the soil of our county. Our good friend, John M Nexsen, who lives scarce three miles from town, and whom we all know to be as mo lest and unassuming an , individual as ever hid his light under a bushel, made this year nineteen bales of cotton on thirteen acres, and on his entire cot ton farm of 100 acres lie lias gathered over eighty bales. Mr. Nexsen was not our informant as to this statement but verified it on being questioned hv a representative of The Record. CdAMBFRLAIX'S STOMACH AXD LIVER TABLETS. Mrs D W Seal has been quite sick lor several days. ttev j ft tuisnon nas oeen on a ) visit to Darlington. Magistrate Baldwin spent a day in Kingstree on business. Clerk of Court Whitehead was in town Saturday on bueiness. The boys and girls who came home for the festive season have returned to their schools. Messrs J H Singletarv and Newell Cameron went down to Kingstree Monday ou business. Hon. Walker Cause, and Messrs S M Benton and G P Matthews were in town Saturday on a little business. The newly elected town council went into office last Thursday. Warden S J Casque was elected treasurer ami J YV Rollins, clerk. Mr Ralph Joyner will in a 1'ew jays leave lor Richmond where hi will enter the machine shops. It is probable thai his brother, Brainard will join him later. Mr T N Griffin has pulled down the aid blacksmith shop on his lot preparatory to building his store house. A portion ol the lumber is on the ground Mr E R Kodgers is arranging to go into the saw mill business. He will probably locate his mill a lew miles Irom town among timber, and will continue to reside here. Mr\V 1 Godwin'ha* moved in to his new quarters. ll<* now h s h neat, roomy, well arranged and convenient woo l working and a blacksmith shop Mr Godwin has by perseverance an 1 cIom? attention built up a very business and is prospering in the -ame undertakim; at which several others failed. Mr C F Flowers left last Wednesday tor Appalachicola, Fla., near which place he will operate a turpentine farm. When he will have "rotten ihinjrs in readine>s his family will join him. We re?rret the departure ol this family and will be triad to see their return. Mr Flowers informs us that he will certainly come back here to live alter a lew years. We understand thai Mr J Q Harrell has sold the large lot. next Mrs F U Rodger*' to Mrs lveiff of Forestville, and that Mrs Keiff will at once bnild a large hotel which she will run. This is cer tainly good news and we hope it is entirely true. We are sadly in need of an ample and modern hotel. The present accomodations for travelers are inadequate, and we know of nothing for which ' I there is a better opening her.* than for a hotel. Mr J F Ktckenbaker has returned from a visit to jiis old home in Barnwell. Mr Rickenhaker and Mr 8 W Gowdy have secured the McCotchen store, next door to Messrs J S McClam fe Co.'s, and will open up a stock ?f pnnrin therein. The first named is a first rate young man, of good business and social habits, and Mr Gowdy, as everybody in this section knows, is a man of sterling qualities, thoroughly reliable and very popular. They ought to succeed and we believe they will. Last Thursday morning, about 3 o'clock Wesley Burgess shot George Lee with a pistol, inflicting a wound from which the doctors 3ay he can not possibly recover, rhe bullet entered the base of the leek and ranged downward. The shooting took place near Mr Jack McKnight's which is about a half nile from Bass' bridge. All the parties are colored. Quite a lumber of young negro men were "V S. The wounde 1 man hears a good reputation. Something is certainly needed in Williamsburg to top the terrible flow of blood in our county. A MARVELOUS IN VENTION. Wonders never cease. A machine has been invented that will eut. paste and hang wall paper. The Held of inventions and discoveries seems to be unlimited. Notable among great discoveries is I)r King's New Discovery for consumption. It has done a world of good for weak lungs and saved many a life. Thousands have u=ed it aud conquered Grip, Bronchitis, i'licuiuoiiia and Consumption. Their general verdict is: "It's the best and most reliable medicine for throat and lung troubles."
