Dependent as we are on a single crop, when that fails or is short, as it frequently happens, there is absolutely nothing to fall back upon and we have to wait patiently until another cotton crop can be made; meantime *? *>' ' * business is stagnated and it is little f woE^det that failures are frequent. Witty another staple crop coming in just at what is now our dullest season, it is easy to see what effect it will have in increasing the importance of our town as a business centre. fi Then, again, the fact that there is a market within easy reach w ill stimulate the farmers of the surrounding country to diversify their crops and plant more tobacco. It is a well-known fact that the best tobacco lands of the county are within easy reach of Kingstree and it must follow as a natural consequence that a I warehouse here, properly managed, would not lack patronage to insure 1 I/O out LVOC! With all these facts in view our business men are keenly alive to the mi * * opportunity that is presented to them and are disposed, to be very liberal in their subscriptions. They realize that in helping the town they are indirectly helping themselves and that no other enterprise involving the same outlay of capital seems to promise better returns. Should * the tobacco warehouse prove a profitable venture other industrial enterprises will follow as a matter of ^ course and the old town iyrill awake from its lethargic slumber and enter upon a new era of business activity and prosperity. It is gratifying to note the enth eiasm with which the people of tl town are taking hold of the n< school building idea. If there any kickers or croakers they are n in evidence. Nor is it surprisii that this should bo a popular subjet as it so closely concerns every pa ent who has at heart the true wt fare of his offspring. Money inves ed in brains always yields large di idenils and it is no mere platitw to say that a young man or worn? who enters the battle of life arnn and equipped with a practical educ tion is better off than one with an ii heritance of money or real estate an nothing more. Everybody seems to agree that v shall have the new building, hi ! there is a slight difference of opii ion as to the method of raising tl necessary funds. We have alread discussed the two plans under coi eideration and expressed an opinio as to the more expedient; but we ai wedded to neither to the exclusio of the other. If the bonding pla meets with more general approval n all means let lis have it. What w want to see is the building a realit and we stand ready to further an scheme whereby that may be accorr plished. It is a matter for the pec pie to determine as to which phi should be adopted, and in order t work more intelligently we wonl suggest that they get together a once and decide upon a plan. That the new building is a neees sity no one disputes; that it is a pos sibility we are all agreed.
