A good deal of March corn has been laid by. Tobacco looks well; early settings are camniencing to button and indications point to a good crop. Cotton is also doing well. Loudon Burgess, a respectable colored farmej, is curing some tobacco this week?the earliest on record lor this section. He expects to make a sale on Saturday to Lea & Jones of Timmonsville. On Sunday the 9lh inst., a hailstorm is reported to have seriously damaged the coru and tobacco crops of Mrs. \V. S. Thomas and airs. vwivti, You have kindly offered the columns of your valuable paper for the farmers to express their wishes as to the holding ot a farmers' institute in Williamsburg county during the approaching summer. I am in favor of anything that will honestly promote the farming interests of any section. Would you be kind enough to outline what would be taught and explain what particular benefit would be derived from such an institute? Jack. [The benefits to be derived from a farmers' institute are so tiumer x ous and varied as to be difficult to explain without going into an extended discussion of the subject. In general, all that pertains to larming and its kindred branches of stock-raisin?, dairying, etc., would be discussed. The most approved methods of intensive farming, the proper use of fertilizers, what crops are adapted to certain soils, rotation and diversification ot crops, diseases ol horses and cattle .and their cure?all these and any other subjects sug* gested are lectured upon by men who, in addition to their studies, have { ained practical experience at the.OlemsOn Coilege experiment station. The subiect of dairying atone is well wcrth the attention ot our farmers. The use <)t\separalors aud the best methods ,of preparir^fc^utter lor imrket are topics of inrerest and utility about whic'i very Jirtle is known by the averwpe farmer in this county. \Ve believe our farmers are standing iu their own light by hot encouraging the institute, which certainly will not come here without a general desire being expressed lor its coming.] A Pleasant uuting.
