Montgomery, the polite and efficient clerk of the board county commissioners, has entered the race for auditor and his card appears in this issue. Mr. Montgomery says he is going in to win and he will no doubt make things lively for his competitors. Mr. W. E. Xesmith, of Cades, came over to Ivingstree Tuesday a few hours on business. Mr. Ne smith and his brother, who comprise the tirm, are wide awake young merchants And by their correct methods and personal popularity have succeeded nicely in their line of business. Monday being sales day one piece of property was sold, viz, the lot of C. .T. Lesesne, bankrupt, situated on Main street, containing the building now occupied by Mr. George S. Barr. The said lot was sold at auction by K. L. Hirsch, Esq., trustee, and was bid in by J. A. Kelley, Esq., at $216 for Barr A Co. T.?st Sundav Mr. B. If. Mvers rc moved a piece of a percussion cap from his eye, which had penetrated the organ Ave years ago and so injured it as jo cause the loss of sight. He was firing an old muzzle-loader when a piece of the cap flew up and entered the ball of the eye, where it remained until after five years the piece of metal worked out. Rev. H. J. Onuthen preached in the Methodist church as usual Sunday morning and evening. Mr. Cauthen's sermons are always excellent, hut the one of Sunday evening deserves special mention. The church was well filled and every one present paid the strictest at ?*i>tion to the eloquent discourse, At the close of the sermon the doors of the church were opened and the following responded to the invitation to join: Mrs. J. M. Swan. Mias Thetis and Juouis Stackley. There are now five avowed E candidates for county auditor, with *J probably more to hear from. In I looking over the list one cannot help being impressed with the eligibility of the material offered for j this very important office. We be lieve that any one of them would fill the office acceptably to the br people. Auditor J. D. Daniel announces his candidacy for re-election as . auditor in this issue. Mr. Daniel has had a Ion# experience as a court house official and is certain ly ' a courteous and obliging in the discharge of his duties as could be de- 111 sired. He is an old campaigner and will not be fouud napping i when the race is on. Mr. Peter G. Gourdin is home j from Davidson College, being a | member of the recently graduated H i class of that institution. With a i] bright, well trained mind and a j| robust constitution Mr. Gourdin is well equipped for the battle of life and it is easy to predict that he will succeed in whatever he chooses as his life work.
