Shipp, Esq., of Florence, spent lust Sunday in our town. 1 Dr. Williams spent a portion of | _ last week in Charleston on business. "One swallow doesn't make a ; * summer," but if it's 80 horse power l it will make a fool. Mrs. Woodberry, of Johnsonville, I i "went down to Charleston last week i to#visit the exposition. ( Mrs. P. E. Severance went up to r Florence one day last week to visit , r "her daughter. Mrs. Brothers. ] The town council is putting out a , t ifumber of shade trees. Few things J improve a town more than plenty of nice clean trees. R. K. Wallace, Esq., came up 1 from Kingstree Monday alternoon ?nd spent a few hours in town on < professional business. l Mr. R. F. Joyner is back after an 1 extended trip of several months in Alabama and Georgia. He went , away some time last summer. Miss A. E. Belk is getting ready , , to build a residence on the northwest corner of Church and Charles ' streets. A large quantity of ma- < terialis now on the cround. I Mr. M. L. Overstreet, Mrs. L. H. j Grimsley, Miss Overstreet and Miss i Anna Sutcliffe went down to the j exposition Monday morning. They will return about Thursday. { Mr. H. L. Whitlock went down to 1 , Pee Dee the first of the week in ! search of shad. There have been 1 ~very few shad here this season, < and those few were bucks and , \ hickories. Had we written anything for our -column last week, we would have , said, among other things, US. W. G. Shipp, Esq., of Florence, stopped 1 over in town Friday night with ( friends." But We were too unwell | to write anything last week and we , didn't say it. M> V T Wtllrq bus sold his nlnce I on Main street to Mr. W.T. Askins. He at once purchased a lot on -Charles street from Mr. W. Jordan i and will build thereon right away, i He already has the brick and a , portion of the lumber in place. This is the third new residence in ' course of erection on Charles street. < I)r. U B. Johnson has become a citizen, and a welcome one too, of 1 our town. He has opened up a < stock of drugs in the building lately , occupied by Mr. E. It. Rodger's -hardware store. We understand ' that the residence just started on < the corner of Charles and Church | streets is being built for him. We extend to Dr. Jrhnson a most , hearty welcome to our town and sincerely hope that his lines have l1 /alien in pleasant places and that I ppace and success will attend him [ in hi* new home. Again we say , welcome. i Sam and John Burgess, tw> d-unks, were up before the intend?nt bright and # arly on the first ! Monday after the full moon. They ' were spreading their legs over an excess of sidewalk Saturday night when the cop invited them to take a stroll. One carried?or was trying to carry?"Golden Wedding," ' while the " White Rabbit" was "do- ; ing" the other into all sorts of knots. , The night spent in the refrigerator ti id* a most soothing effect, and when brought up Monday promptly "nwnpfl Hit* corn"?or was it rye? 1 The town treasury is now in better I ( shape to the extent of a few dollars. Last Friday night while the through freight was on the pass track a car was broken into and some chains and shoes taken. Saturday a search was made and the goods were found in Peter Martin's house and Peter's wife told the officers that he (Peter) had brought the goods to the house. At this time Peter was moving i?\vay silently but swiftly and in the direction of the sylvan shades. J. S. Howie put his blood hounds on the trail, which was followed several. hours but finally lost, Peter taking; to the lake and wading down it' some considerable distance. The) cha-e being called off things settled i down to their accustomed quiet. I About three o'el'wk it was learned! that Peter had just been back In | town, having come up within hi hundred or two feet of the depot.! The chase started again and eou-j tinued two or three hours with the! *ame outcome as the morning's | run. On Monday afternoon Peter was again located just across the lak and the party went forth for ano jar permit but the dogs failed to pick up the trail. There are but few female lawyers. Dantzler, presiding judge, March term,1902. We, the grand jury, beg to submit this our presentment: * -ii urn*, \v e Have passed upon mi umo handed out to us by our worthy solicitor with due and deliberate consideration and have found true bills in all cases save two. We have examined the jail and its surroundings and found them in fairly good condition except that there is need for a few panes of glass in different windows. The prisoners are being very well cared for. We have appointed a special committee, consisting of our foreman, J. J. Graham, as chairman, and J. G. Barraivay, L. L. Bodgers, P. M. Brockinton and J. T. Frierson, to examine the various county officers, and have elected LeRoy Lee, Esq., as expert to assist said committee in their investigation, the result of which will l>e reported in our final presentment. Our attention has been called to the county line road leading from the Georgetown railroad south to the eight-mile post; also that section of the road leading from Ards Cross Roads to Gallavans Ferry, from near the residence of W. H. Harmon to the county line road near Pine Grove. We are informed that very little,if any, work has been lone on these roads for the past two years, and we recommend that special attention be given them at once. We understand that the fault if this neglect is not confined to Dur supervisor, but rather to the road overseers. It has been brought to our attention that one W. W. Johnson, a married man, has for the past two ar three years been living in adul tery with one Miss E.F.Benson, lis sister-in-law, in the Johnsoncille neighborhood, and the names >f J. E. Tharpe, J. J. G. Stone, Mrs. \nnaTharpe, Mrs. Emma Johnson *nd J. T. Gastor have been given js as witnesses and we recommend that the necessary steps be taken to prevent the continuance of this co-habitation. . We are glad to know and see that our county is in a prosperous condition and extend our hearty thanks to Your Honor for your complimentary remaiks in refinance to the recent very great improvements made in our Gourt House. We think that in keeping with this Improvement, the suggestions of the last grand jury should be carried out. We refer to that part of their report in reference to the condition of the Court House Square. We agree fully with our past grand jury that the square, or i at least a part of it, about twentyfive or thirty feet immediately around the Court House, be cultivated in some kind of lawn grass and surrounded by an iron fence. This arrangement, we think, will allow nlnntv nf rnnm for hlttrhioir stock over the remaining part of the square. We extend our hearty commendation to our Solicitor for the vigorous manner in which he discharges his duty and to Your Honor we extend our hearty thanks and appreciation for the kindness and courtesy shown us, and the able charges of law given us by you, which so well enabled us in our attempt So discharge our duty. J. J. GltAHAM, Foreman. March 19th, 1902. 81* PPPL E M E XT A R V REPORT. To his honor Chas. G. Dantzler, judge presiding.
