Theodore Price, the New York cotton broker, makes the statement that the present crop is the iowe9t average oa record for nineteen years. In spite of this the price continues lew beyond all reason. Seed, too, is disproportionately low, coaaidering the fact that cotton seed oil is out of sight in price. All kinds ot provisions are advancing daily, so that the poor farmer is catching it on every side. Yet if the f erasers can manage to hold their cotton and seed h short while longer we believe they will have the sit nation well in hand, as prices for their tirnritiof? ?r? turn tn advance later on. Ib the yacht races between Columbia and Shamrock II, the old defender won out in one, two, three order, heaee the cop still Remains on this ?ide oi the water. Sir Thomas Lipton's boat will not be taken home for seme time yet, and other races are in prospect. One of these is notably interesting owing to the fact that the crews pf the twe vachts will be exchanged. This is to deteraine whether the recant victory is due to the awpcrioritT ot the Aroerscan yacht '* Of'H> the nautical skill of her fatty. In this race ihe odds are jftilivor of the Shamrock II. HAMPTON FOR GOVERNOR. In announcing his withdrawal from the senatorial contest, Col. Wilio Joies makes the suggestion that all the candidates for this position stand aside and leave the ?eld open to Gen. Wade Hampton. The other candidates are Messrs. George Johnstone, D. S.' Henderson, J. J. Hemphill, John / ? v * T ? YJcilJ iiV AbUUI t ?jaiJIllCI aud John L. McLaurin. Col-! onel Johnston^, like the chivalrous gentleman that he is, en (ieroed Col Jones' proposition the very day it appeared in the daily papers. Almost equally promptly Mr. Latimer, who is in Washington, gave out an interview declining to withdraw in tavor of Gen. Hampton. This coarse of action on the part of Johnstone and Latimer is fot surprising. It is the expected that happened in both cases. Mr. Latimer is in politics for what' there is in it, chiefly the .$5,000 a >e?r salary and the six year senatorial terra, while Col. Johnstone, though doubtless equally ambitious, is willing to deter to Gen 1 ! . . - .oir.i H-* Mjj'f : ;':at the State my makekjmu-j fo injuntice done iiira ten years ago. Vrr!-r?t ti.9 nther candidates, between these two extremes, will do remaius to be seen. General Hampton is now a Tenaged man, having lived far beyond the three score years and ten al lotted to humanity. Ou this Mr. Latimer bases his objection to dragging the grand old hero back into politics. Mr. Latimer's solicitude is touching, Yet there are thousands eqally solicitous of General Hampton's welfare who disagree with Mr. Latimer. What could be a more fitting and graceful ' (tribute to the chief figure in South Caroliua history to-day, as soldier, 1 statesman, patriot and hero, than 1 that the closing years of* his carear should be irradiated by a token of the confidence and 1 lore of bis people? It is claimed I the factional lines are obliterated. Now is the time to put it to the , test. South Carolina will never have another opportunity to honor her bravest son. Cades Chronicles. Mr. C. L. Carsten has had built several neat little cottage?, which add much to the appearance of Cades. We hope this example will be followed by other of our 1 citizens. With a few old, dilapfl idated looking structures removed , and new buildings erected in their ' stead, and withal a liberal use of the paint-brush, Cades would take J on new life and growth. J Last Thursday night a festival jj was given at the resideuce of Mr. and Mrs. J. T. McElveen to raise ) luuds for the purchase of an orgAn 1 tor Bethesda Methodist church. ( Albeit the crowd present was not c so large ?g was expected, the af- 1 fair was quite a success com irom social aud financial standpoint. Two cakes were sold by Toting, J each young man paying ten cents ^ tor the privilege of casting a bal- c lot for the ladv of his choice. The 1 e cakes were awarded to Misses ] Maggie Kpps and Ethel Kodgors, 1 who reoeived the largest numbers of votes. The proceeds of the eatertaintnonc amouited to about $40.00. To the ladies much credit is due for the success of the oc- (l casion. t V Mr. J. Q. flarrell, overseer of J the railroad floating gang, has t been quite sick for some dare. Mr. Hampton Ceek is new section master at at this place. 1 < A football game is never considered a success if it is as blood- 1 less as a French duel.
