JUNE 27, 1901. j.' ? _i_ ? RIVER POLLUTION. Considerable discussion was caused last week by the dumping into the river ot the carcasses of several dogs which had died from the eiTects of poison, as was mentioned ip op.r last issue. When it became generally known that ?;he dead had been thus disposed, of sp niufli opposition was aroused that the carcasses were removed from the river and carried outside ol the town limits, where they should have been taken at tirst. It seems that they were thrown into the river through mere thoughtlessness, or a misunderstanding ot instructions, ami the prompt removal of the contaminating bodies checked the criticism that would have been incurred by the town authorities and the board of health had they allowed the pure waters ol our > river to be thus polluted. While it seems that the easiest ?- .1: ? 1 r vyajr iu uj?i?ix>c wi vuai ui iciuoc flatter is to dump it into Ike river and let it float away, a moment's reflection will show at what a fearful cost a little laior is saved. The government reports show ilul the pollution of streams contiguous to towns and cities cause sickness, injury to business, deterioration of property and a host of other troubles.
