MAY 23, 1901. \ _ i I HE SITUATION. \ i As it usually happens in such i f cases, a great many wild and sensational rumors have gone forth i t concerning the prevalence of small I pox in Kingstree. many of them' he:ns without foundation, in fact. 1 For example, the writer, who was j! in lieorgetown ujpti! last K/iday,!, heard there that there were twen- i ty-fcye cases o/saiulj-pox in Kings- JI tree and that the town was under j% U'linn li*> arrived I til <1III i lit . fi uvu *?V here it was found that the town i was not under quarantine and ; never had been. Moreover, ii j; was rumored that Georgetown wa>! quarantined against Kiugstreeli To-day (Tue>day) a person direct j, Irom tlie latter city assures us that li there is no quarantine then against Kingstree. There art-I, z many rumors abroad similar t< ! this and equally unreliable. j JSow we intend to give the fact.- j in regard to the situation hero a> ,'i nearly as we can ascertain (hem { after several days' close inquiry and investigation. The first ap- ; pearance of the malady lhat i aroused suspicion was among the l pupils o! the graded school, sev-! eral ol whom showed a slight skii j eruption. .Several days later th?-1 principal was similarly affected, |i and it was thought best to close II the school. i Th,e town authorities, acting ni.j the opiniou ot the citizens of th? | town sxpressed in a called meet- 1i ing, telegraphed lor i)r. Kvans, li who promptly appeared on the'; scene and examined the various{ cases, pronouncing several of them j to be small-pox or varioloid of a very mild type and recommending that the patients be isolated. The local physicians are divided in opinion, some of ti?em agreeing with Dr. livans, while others in- j sist that theso-Cjilied small-pox isi nothing more than chicken pox.' or something similar. However I this may be, there has not been a ! single case where the patient j showed any effects more than a j slight skin eruption. No new! fice* ham develoned in several i -r r J davs and the trouble is believed; to be at an end. Indeed, the dis-! ease has been so trilling in its! effects that most of the patients! did not even go to bed. We have ' as good doctors hers as tbere are in the State, and trie fact that npne of them consider the situation as at all alarming shows tbef insignificance of the malady. In I naauy ol the. town people free-1 lj assert t heir opinion that there has not been ^ a single case of smali-pox hare. We do not believe ia tsnderi.?* * / * > * , m rating fh^ seriousness of a lisease, aud in t!ie face of Dr. Evans' report will not deny that there have been several cases of email-, per or varioloid here; but tke re-1 ports winch have gone out are I many of them erroneous and very m.uch' esajrgerated. The foregoing ace the facts,.so far as we hare been able to arrive at them, and in this review of the situation we hare tried neither to add to nor take Irom them.
