The Candidates fi?r Public .'lonors j Submit Their C laims to Their Fetlow Citizens and Define Their Positions on Public Matters. The county campaign was opened here Tuesday. The meeting was lwld in the court house ami was well attended. C'ountv Chairman A. IT. Williams, presided. Nearly i all the candidates were on hand and > submitted their claims to the "dear people." The ball was opened by the aspirants for legislative honors, and some of the speakers made their first public speech. We give a brief synopsis of what each speaker said, and regret that space will not allow ; us to give a report of 1 he speeches of } all of the other candidates. Mr. W. W. Kennedy, candidate for the legislature, was introduced, and ' ? i took occasion to express his thanks I for the flattering vote given him two years ago, and said he . felt encouraged to come before tiny, people j again. Defined his positioi^on the liquor question, sayiug he was in favor of the dispensary. Favors making the term of all county uf j ficers four years instead of two, and bienniel Sessions of the legislature, j If elected he would support every i measure that would improve th** j common schools. Favors the liberal ' support of State colleges. J. DAVIS CARTER Was introduced and began his speech by telling a joke. Was a candidate in response to the request of his fellow citizens and if elected would devote his time and attention to his duties, would look tvell into all legislation affecting the interest of his constituents. Believes the dispensary law the best system of controlling the whiskey truffle; favors the liberal support of t5tate colleges and thinks the common scools should i be better provided for. ' K S. W ALL Would give the people his best j services if sent to the legislature.! Would always be in his seat and! answer every roll call unless provi-! dentially prevented. Would stand j by the dispensary law. Does notj think the time has come when pro-, hibition would be practicable -Mr.; Wali was applauded. \v. m. KakLS Was called next imd made a good sjieech; said grave issues were now pending and the jieople must settle them. The time has come when every citizen should study the problems before us and be prepared to vote intelligently. He thought freight rates should be made more explicit i and that a more equitable scale of j charges should be adopted, so that: the rates between local points would i be the same as the rates between ' foreign points. Thinks legislation should be enacted against the formation of trusts and combines, which I inflict such unjust oppression upon the people. Ilegards the dispensary law the best solution of the liquor problem. The people have endorsed it and he would stand bv them. Favors giving State colleges sufficient money to maintain efficient services and thinks the common schools should be.' more liberally provided for. Promised to do his duty faithful! v. I v J. If. lilDSOX Was brought out by his home clnb. Advocates the dispensary, and longer terms for the public schools. Also favors better roads, and thinks a better system of connty government sliould be formulated. T. P. (IOUKDIX Advocates broad and liberal education id this time of competition. Has had po experience in legislative work and was not prepared to advocate bienniel sessions of the legis luturc, bnt thinks the matter should be submitted to the people! stands for good roads but thinks no chauges should be made in the present system of maintaining them until a better one is devised. Does not think whiskey drinking can be prohibited by law, and although he deprecates the evil of whiskey, and would b- glad to see it blotted out, yet under the present conditions the dispensary law should stand. W. S. GRAYSON* Declared himself in favor of the dispensary, and said he did not think prohibition could be enforced. If elected would do eveiything in his power that would promote the best interests of his county. J. G. MCCTI.LOUGH Was absent on account of sickness in his family and sent a note ot regrets. I. K. liUOCKINTOX Favors the dispensary, the selling of State farms and the employing of convicts in building good roads.
