VOL. XXII, NO. 46. DARLINGTON, S. 0., THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 1895. WHOLE NUMBER 1,084. Darlington in the Convention [News and Courier.] Mr. Johnstone was going on to defend the Courts and, turning to Senator Tillman, he said that he (Tillman) even charged the Courts with corruption. Senator Tillman: “Ain’t you going too fer?” Mr. Johnstone: Didn’t you just charge that rich men were allowed tb get through loopholes by the Courts?” Senator Tillman: “I just ask ed the question, and referred to the fact of so few rich men being convicted.” ^lr. Johnstone: “What is the justice of attacking the Courts for it?” Senator Tillman: “Haven’t you noticed that since attention has been called tothis thing that there haven’t been so many new trials granted?” Mr. Johnstone: “I’ll try and bring this thing home to you. Don’t you remember the case of James in Darlington, who, al though wrapped inr wealth, v. as convicted because of strong sen timent, and you pardoned him?” Senator Tillman: “Yes, and he offered the reward himself, and the pardon was asked for by three-fourths of the citizens, and the facts showed that he was nof guilty.” Mr. Johnstone: “Yes, I’ll be just to you, if you are not just to the judiciary, for James shoul 1 have been pardoned,as ho was.” Senator Tillman: “I think the pardon a proper one.” Mr. Johnstone: “You did per fectly right in issuing that par don, for the man was improperly convicted and was about to be hanged, and that ought to make you more careful in future.” Senator Tillman: “Thank you.” (Laughter.)
