MUZZLING FREE SPEECH. Col. John J. Dargan, of Su n- ter, who went to Edgefield on Thursday to make a political speech, was waited on by a com mittee headed by the Sheriff of the county, who informed him that they were going to prevent him from speaking, and would do so by force if necessary. Said the gallant leader of the band of two hundred brave men, all armed, who had assembled for the purpose of controlling one unarmed man: “We don’t like your views, and don’t in tend that you shall express them in this county.” Finding that he would not be permitted to speak. Col. Dargan set out for the depot, but was followed by the mob, wbo insulted him in every conceivable way, apply ing to the lady members of his family the most o ’trageous epi thets known to man. He bare- ly escaped with his life, and he would not have done that if the mob had had their way, their evi dent purpose being to aggravate him to the point of resenting Brown’s Iron Bitters, State right now as a tobacco market, and there is every rea son to believe that we will keep it. Old people who need medicine to regulate the bowels and kid neys will find the true remedy EQUAL DIVISION OF DELEGATES. / Mr. A. J. A. Perritt and the Editor of The News, members of the Executive Committee of “The Forty” for this county, appeared on Monday last, by in vitation, before the County Democratic Executive Commit tee, which was in session here, and urged the calling of a Coun ty Democratic Convention for the purpose of selecting four candidates, two from each po litical faction, to be voted for as delegates to the Constitutional Convention. After a full dis cussion of the subject, final ac tion on it was postponed until Monday, July 15, when another meeting of the Committee will be held. In the meantime ac tive steps will be taken to bring about the consummation so de voutly to be desired—the selec tion of four of our very best men as delegates to the Con von tion without any party fight. While the outloook for the ulti mate success of this endeavor is by no means “luminous.” there is still left a reasonable chance to hope that the best result may yet ensue, and as long as the least glimmer of such a hope remains The Raws may be counted on to labor zealously for the accomplishment of that end, come what may. In other words, we will have peace if we have to fight for it! A BF KMT OUTLOOK. This medi when he would have been cut to j cino does not stimulate and con- pieces in the very streets of Edgefield At a County Demo cratic Convention held in Edge field on Monday, Mr. B. B. Ev ans, a brother of the present Governor of the State, offered a resolution endorsing and prais ihg the conduct of the mob that set upon Col. Dargan, which resolution was adopted by a considerable majority. The bare recital of the facts in this remarkable case is sufficient to show that the conduct of the Edgefield people was most shameful, and any comment from up would be superfluous We must say, however, that a Sheriff, the highest peace officer of a county, who heads a mob bent on violence, is somewhat of an anomaly even in South Carolina, one that would not have been a’lowed to exist long in “the old times.” Gov. Evans, however, doubtless thinks the Sheriff of Edgefield performed a praiseworthv act, one strictly in the line of his duty. The Governor’s brother, by the reso lution he introduced in the Edgefield convention, shows be yond question that /■« thinks so.
