The Uty Counell H,an Closed ti Contract for a Ieautiful aut HubHta,, tia I IoHoe wagon for the Excolsiur Fire (;omnpany. The Newberry liremen, who have in the past served the town so faithfully and successfully, are soon to be re warded for their excellent services, by being provided with more modern and up-to-date equipment for duty. At the meeting Tuesday night the City ('ountil decided to buy a one- I horse hose wagon, and closed the con tract with Mr. D M. Wells, who rep resntls the Racine Fire 1Engine and Motor Com pany, of South Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for an up-to date wagon, with all the latest appliances, neces sary for good substantial work. The wagon will be pretty as well as substantial and strong. It will be painted garnet, lettered and trimmed in gold. On each end of the seat'r will be painted in large letters Otto, the wagon being nanmed in honor of our I popular Mayor. On the back of the scat, belotv the brass railing which surrounds the seat, the words Excel sior No 1, will appear, and on each side of the body, the letters N. F. D. will be painted-Newberry Fire Do partnent. The wagon is to be shipped within 90 days from the time the order is placed, and in the meantime prepara tions will be made for putting in the wagon, drop harness, ote., at the pres ent headquarters of the Excelsior Com pany. The council has not yet taken any action looking to getting a horse, and as a suitable horse has to be selected for this purpose, it is probable that Assist ant Chief Brown, who is such an ex cellent. judge of horse flesh, will likely be sent to Kentucky, or w sore he thinks best, to get a good horse. r'he idea of our city fathers is not to : ''an old scrub," but to get a good horse. A suitable man, one that understands training a horse, will be put in charge and kept at the station all the time. This is certainly a stop in the right direction, and the citizens should reap the benefit in a reduction of insurance. The President of the Excelsior Fire Company will publish the first of the year, a statement of the number alarms responded to during the year, the num ber of fires, and the estimated loss at each fire, during the year 1901, and we venturs the assertion that the insur ance companies represented here have not pald out in the town of Newberry during the year, as much as $1,000 on losses. We know of no way of getting at what has been paid out on insurance -we wish we did. But, the point we want to make is, with the excellent service and good results we have had in the past and with the coning im provements and better equipments which will guarantee quicker and more prompt service, making less risk, something should be done at once, to give the citizens benefit in a less rate of insurance just as soon as the new service is installed. In this action tie council of 1901 has done the town service which will stand to their en-edit for years to come. Thrnont i-ore?
