TH ILAHtIST EN lt)IEIIICNT I N TillC. EHISTORY OF Till. INKTITUTION. A Most Flstti riig Oping-Thu Enroll ,uent 1? jaches l 0l.-Several Ad dresses by Prominunt Men' in Tiesday's paper we mentioned the informal opening of Newberry College on Monday morning and stated that the enrollment would exceed that of any ;revious session, but little did we think the numlr would reach 1011. Morday and ''uesday were taken up in examtining and classifying new stu dents and examining the old students who had to leave college last session before the examinations. The formal opening took place Wed nesday morning, and several prominent, men of the city, and friends of the col loge, were present by invitation to speak words of welcome, encourage ment and warning to the young gentle men and ladies. The friends of the college rejoiced last year at the larg ; numlber of stu dents in attendance, and thooght t.hat the high water mark had been teached, but the record is broken as the follow ing figures will show, which were read out in the chapel Wednesday morning by President Cromer: Total enrollment last session includ ing post graduate students, 154: total enrollment including post gladuate students, and several studetts who will return to college shortly, 161; highest enrollment previously made in college classes, 111; present enrollment in col lege classes, 123; young ladies in col lege, 15. it was an inspiring sight to see the chapel filled with so many bright and manly young men and promising young women seeking an education-a Chris tian education. After the usual morning exercises, Sc,ipture leading and prayer by Rev. .1. L. Williamson, President Cromer said that as it had been customary, and as there were several prominent gen tlemen present, they would have some short, addresses to the students and called first on Dr. L. P. McClintock, of the A. R. P. church. We shall attempt only a short synop sis, couched in one own language, of what each speaker said, which cannot do justice to them. The talks were all well-timed and eloquent, and were fre quently applauded by the students. Dr. McClinto: k said that, it was grat ifying to him to see so many present, and that he congratulated the president and faculty, and rejoiced with them in having the largest enrollment they had ever had. He deemed it an extraordi nary privilege to attend college at th is time. The saddest hearts todry "ro those that have not these opportuni ties, and you should take advantage of and faithfully improve your college op portunities. You bring here to place under the tuition of these teachers your mental training and moral powers, which is most important of all, and which sometimes is overlooked, and you must, remember and keep in mind that you come to improve and develop your moral as wvell as your mnental po0w er's. Woe be to those who go through to the neglect of this. That is the rea son this is a Christian institut, ion; why these professors are here, they would not be here but for theirE quialiintionis for such. I am safe ini saying that when the visioni presented Itself to your worthy p)reSident, lovely as it was, if it had been to come here to train your in tellectual and mental p)ower.s, he would hlave been over yonder winninig laurels in another p)rofession. Hie saw that if he came here ho couldl influene the youth--their moral characters, that is what, drew him. That mott ve prompt ed him to give up a more remunerative cal.ling to come here. That animat,ed the professors also more than any otber reason. Hie said, let me insist that, you take this thought-that, your president and faculty are yearning that, the st,u dents of this college be as much traIned in moral as in intellectual and mental traIning. In your recitation rooms don't cheat and take advantage of each other; this would pain your teachers and east disgrace on your college. Be men and women-earnest, pure, moral, Christian characters. Rev. W. I. Herbert was next called on. He said that,he wanted the boys to know him-and he wanted to know the girls. It h ad not beenE lon g since he was in the condition of those pecsent In the largest class, not, so long that he had forgotten It, and what he said wa9 to the youngest present,. lie said, we read ii the Bible that God is the same yesterday, today and forever, Each of us have our yesterday, our to day, and our forever. \Vhat we need for our yesterday Is pardon, for our to day is purity, and our tomorrow and( all time Is power. Pardon, purity, power. Sins pardoned, life purified, Christ within me, the power to lhve right. 11 you are entering thme FeXesh man class, sett,le the qjuestion now tbat, your lifC is pure.
