PUBL '111D EVERY THURSDAY NEW BERRY, S. . WONEN OF THE SOUTT. Who Once Queened it Over Hun 8 of Slaves and Went Through the Horrors of the Civil War Are now a Hard-Working Class That con ftns Many Who Are Orna Ments to Their CoUntry. fFrom the Philadelphim:News.] My text is the Soutk woman of -ay. Of the womaq a genera ago; of her who - 'hed it over reds of slaves, anct Ourn slaved the soldiers of thq 'th: of her born in luxury, su !privation want without a. trmur, and y donning homespun made her silks I satins into le-flags ; of her w,,4 delicate fin used only to silkAhreads, wove womanly tears into the warp and of rebel gray-I have nothing .'here to say except, God bless her! As hydrogen and oxygen rush to gether with explosive force and develop a liquid clear and white and pure, so out of the shock of the mingling of old aristocratic forms and ideas with a modern civil;zation the woman of to day has been developed. Nor does the figure cease here, for she is a co ipould radically different from its component elements and, to my mind, SUprior to both. One notable respect in which she has the advantage of the woman of ante bellum days is the lack of prudish ness which characterizes her deport ment. It is true that a few old towns, like Charleston and New Oriea:. the unmarried girl is still treated as if .he were a creature morally, mentalv an physically irrcsponsible and the wor:d at large a horrible monste,r ready to gobble up the tender morsel at the first L-1raction of a chance. But in the new settlements which have sprung up about us and in most of the old a woman is-well, she is generally -c knowledged to belong to the race of mankind. I do not mean to say that in any in stance she is treated with less gentle deference than were Southern women of yore; but that, recognizing the fact that her innate modesty is her surest .protector, the world n1lows her a free -dom of action which, I honestly be lieve, is not enjoyed by any other class of wofnen on the gobe. Scorn ing a chaperone, she walks, rides and drives with any gentieman of her acqur.int ance. Not even "the cen!orious worli"" now objects to her goi!ng alone with her escort to a bal or the theatre, or unching tete a tt'e with him~ after the liAnd the girl of to-day is superior to her mother in that she has had and profited by the advan tages of adversity. Of course there are a few mnoneved ones who affect lady-like indolence. but the great majority of So'utherners are poor, and beig "'poo pod to ae knowledge how poor, the~ women of :' land have developted a perfect geniums for making both e::d meet an~d keep ing up appearances. As a hyperb:call instance I heard agrlredlagn ly declare that she e: d.own' her brother's dIsesrded &:: o :lr self and made biscu.: -u hi woman incm ::aou ::am figure as aw::n:r. ush can cook and do ! f .s k quite as well as he :1 so acle clime.
