PUBLISHED EVERY THURSDAY AT NEWBERRY, S. C. -OLD THANKSGIVING FUN. mage Recalls a Thanksgiving of H is Boyhood. )e Witt Talmage, D. D., in Ladies' S Home0Journal.] H'ow my mind is crowded with nksgiving memories! On no other does my memory become such a 'eidoscope, and as I sit here in my ened room and write, almost every ute the scene changes. I give to kaleidoscope of memory a turn, and re they are, natural as life, around country hearth on a cold winter t. I hear the hickory fire crackle, d see the shadows flit up and down wall. Games that sometimes well i upset the chairs-"Blind-Man's ," "Who's Got the Button," "The ping Corn," "The Molasses Pud ng," and the witch stories that e the neighbors' boys afraid to go me after dark. Hickory nuts on e dish, roseate apples on the other. e boisterous plays of "More Bags on be Mill," "Leap Frog," "Catcher," nd and around the room until some one got hurt and a kiss was of >fered to make up the hurt, the kiss more resented than the hurt. High old time! Father and mother got up -and went into the next room because they could not stand the racket. Then, instead of compunctions of conscience, a worse racket. The mothers and ives came in the afternoon, all wrap up from the'cold, and their feet on foot-stove. When they got warn d took out their needles and sal n it was a merry group and full ol eis Once in a while a needle woule -p and make'a bad scratch upon th( haracter of some absentee, but for tb most part it was good, wholesome talk And in the evening when the younE - people came and the old people wer( in one room and the young people ir anotner, in the latter there was som( lively stepping, while the black bo3 played "Moneymusk"; even grand father in the next room, who had dis tributed many tracts on the sin o ancing, was seen to make his heel go It seemed to me a great fuss and i great gathering to get one quilt made But the fact was, that good neighbor hood was quilted, warm sympathie: were quilted, life-time friendships wer quilted, and connubial bliss wa: quilted. And they stayed late. An< such plays as you had in that bacl room when you joined bands, and on, of the loveliest stood in the ring What a circumference to what a cen I ut now the scene is fading out The old fireplace is down, and th< house is down with it. One of thos< boys went to sea and was never hear< of. Another became squire in a neigh boring village. Another went to col Slege and became a minister. Ano the died the following summer, until nov eyare all gone ! THE PRQSPEROUS!SOUTH. The Wonderful Activity Continues to Sprea' *Despite Wall Street's Flurry. ~.The Manufacturers' Record of No i~vember 15, says : The excitement in Wail Street,i Slong continued, would necessarily hav an injurious influence upon all lines o ..buiiss in all sections of the country but as trade and manufacturing in terests everywhere are prosperous, it 1 not probable that the stock jobbing op erations of New York will have more than a temporary effect upon genera business. Under any circumstances though, the South is in a better posi tion to stand even a panic than an: M ter section. It has gathered bi crops that will aggregate in value fol the year nearly $1,000,000,000, its cottor alone, including the seed, counting uj this year between $450,000,000 anc $500,000,000, every dollar of whichi will draw from the North and Europe Its farmers are practically out of debt and many of them have a good surplus its manufacturing interests are pros perous, and its railroads are crowdec with freight traffic. The whole Soutt is ad.ncing rapidly, and if dependenl r.pon its own financial resources coulc stand the strain far better than th4 West. But the enormous shrinkag4 in stock values in 'Wall Street wil tend to drive money from that cente: of wild speculation to safer invest ments in Southern development and manufacturing interests. The dechie in 3 stocks on the New York Ex change since November 1 representsa $100,000,000, and the people who have seen fortunes swept away like this will prefer to put their money elsewhere i the future. The daily accumulation of wealth in the United States is enor mous, and it must find a field of invest ment somewhere. Driven from Wall Street speculations, and no longer find in any profitable openings in the WVest as in former years, it must in evitably turn to the South. Thus, in stead of Wall Street's flurry injuring the South, it will help) to drive a still larger volume of money this way he past wee shows continued activity in the organization o,f in dustrial enterprises and of town building companies. Salem, Va., leads o with an appropriation by the se.v eal land c-ompanies there of $500,000 in cash to secure the establishmenit there of a rolling nmill, cottou mill, car works and other enterprises ; in Buena Vsita a $1,000,000 company has been organized to build basic steel works, ad three improvement andl building copanies with an aggregate capital oof$300,000 have been started in the sme place; Glasgow has organ ized a $100,000 car works company ; Noirfolk, with three land improvement companies a capital of $700,000 ; Wheeling, W. Va., is to have new steel works; atVicksburg, Miss., a 600,000 phospate company has been chartered, and at Aberdeen, in the same State, a $50,000 machine shop company ; at Algiers, La., a $75,000 brewry will be built ; Bessemer, Ala., hs organized a $100,00t' pipe manu facturing company ;Baltimore, a $:200. 00& ompany ; Bartow, Fla., a $50,000 manufacturing company ; Blacksburg, e n -em nstove- foundry;- Rusk.
