Many y toung men frol our ow: i town are numbered amonwg its aIlui:i:,i and niany miore have received ii strut tion withini its walls. These annual commencement exer eises are always enjoyed, and are it tended by all our people. Ii fact wlhi the institution is under t ie ininediatc control of the Luthe.laan Synod of Soutl Carolina, So far as the instruction goes it is not a sectarian college, Ibut is it fact Newberry College. Her professors are learned an(: scholarly gentlernen, and the influene( of such Anl inlstitutionl in our Inidsi cannot well be over-estitmtted. It i right and proper that we shiould :ppre cinte and properly value su'h cent res o: intiuence for the good and up-liftinm and enlightelnent of the y uthis of o land. 1d.The anniual l'ontinenlcemlent began on Sunday. Large numibers of 11iokl, from tow i and the adjacent coutntrly, and froml all parts of the State, alwayv attend these annual feasts of learning, and the present commencement is io exception. The past session of the college h, been an eminently su-eessfUl one. One hundred and twenty-seven naies havi been enrolled, and the average attend anee has been upwards of one hundred during the entire college year. Not only this, but the Lutheran Church in So'ith Carolina appreciating the value of tie college and the good work it is doiriv for the ('hureb ha, contributed inoney for the ection ot houses on the college calipls for the professors. One of these is now nearly completed at a cost of 2,.01: and t we more will be erected during the clumii n, suimmer at a cost of $,~J00 each. This need has long been felt. These houses will also add very much to the appear anee of the beautiful campus. The graduating class this year num bers six young imen. The alumni roll now has about one hundred names. and in most eases the young men who have gone out from her walls have been and are men o1 influence in their respective coninuli ties for good. 1AccA LA t:1t'TE: sE:RMoN. The an nual sermon to the gradulating class on Sunday morning was delivered by the Rev. L. A. Fox, 1) D., of Salem, Va., from the the text: "Verily, verily, I say unto you except a coru of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone; but if it die it bri:getih forth much fruit."1-John xii: -4. The speaker spoke of the perfect character of Christ and of the impor tance to the world of his crueiixiion and death. Christ offered hiimsif as the perfect exemplar. His eharacter was perfect. He was the universa! man. He fultilled every condition. As a reformer he did not strike at individ ual vices. His whole life was one of self-surrender to the work He came t< perform, and such a surrender ennoble. and enriches. As we stand before hi: sepulchre his life seems a failure. H i: enemies sat upon the stone of the sepulchre in ti iumiph. Disappoin tin a as this was to the world it was no dis appointment to 1him1. The biblical p)oint ini his mIisaion was his crucifixion death, and resurrection. When the time came for him to meet death he met it bravely. H-is life had a two fold bearing. The influence upon the divine governmient awlt uponh nian': motives. The holy infinite and the sinful infinite had to be brought to gether. He bridged the chasmi between the two. Human sacrifices that had app)eared in so miany Places and so many ways had proved unavaiiing. Christ died that he might ofler hiimsel a sacrifice for sin. His death gave efficiency to his life. Without hiis (leath his teachings were meire philosophy, anid his miracle's pirodigies. .H-is deatib acconiplished all and brought back an offenided God. We should imitate hiimi in a comipleti surrender of ourselves to ou r work. He felt that lie haid a idiviine work, and at thle end said: "I ha ve hllnished th<i work thou gayest nie to doi." T1ht preacher said that every life, to lie sue cessful, niust. feel that it is called to special work. No 11an1 caii sticceed cx cepit where God liuts hiimi.
