A Oouble Motion Showing the Earth's Revolution. ATLANTA, Ga., April 6.-The long est pendulum on this continent swings at the Technological school in Atlanta. It is a heavy piece of iron, pear shaped, and attached to a brass wire 42 feet long. The upper end of the wire is pivoted ini a steel point, which rests on the centre of a steel plate, so as to - cause the least possibJe friction. JC Directly urier the pendulum is a large circle divided into twenty-four sections of 15 degrees each, correspond ing to the distance traversed by the sua in, an hour. The North Pole is placed directly under the pendulnm, and the meridians of longitude are drawn to meet there. The parallels of latitude make smaller circles inside the other. Dr. I. S. Hopkins, the president of the school, who made and put up the pendulum, makes the experiment as tollows: The iron is brought to the edge of the circle on the meridian of Atlantaa, and let swing across to the other side. Apparently it swings straight across the circle, but graduallyS it traverses the parallels of latitude S from North to East in a direction oppo- h site to the revolution of the earth. The pendulum, not being directly over the co axis of the earth, does not move in - exactly the same time. but fall- ' ehind. ] It is said that at the -North role the pendulum would traverse the circle in just twenty-four hours, and on the equator it would not traverse it at all, for gravity would then operate to pre vent it. of 31 A1lti:I), April 10, ISSI, at I p. m., by Rev. Alabama, where they will make their home. Al r. Tom Cr'orner has b. n;ght a yoke of oxen from Mr. Lou Wash Floyd. They are fine animals and were purchased on reasonable terms. Mr. C'romer will haul logs and lumber to and from Shocklev's saw mill. Some miserc"ant swapped saddles with Mr. .J. M. Bowers last Saturday while his horse stood in its .c -ustome 1 place at New berry. Mr. Bowers lost a splendid saddle and found a miserable, dirty old shell in its place. Mr. William Pitts has gone to the. bed side of his son-in-law, Mr. Sledge, who is quite ill at his home in Charlotte. Helena has a juvenile correspondent to the Clinton Gazette. Is "Juvenile" m'sculine or feminine? The prayer-meetings will hereafter be held at the church. or at least until fur ther notice. The church is a more accep table place every way -it will afford more room, light and air. The feeling will be more reverential, while the sweet strains from the organ must give additional in sp'ration to the beautiful hymns that are sung. Those who conduct the meetings extend a cordial invitation to all who may wish to attend, and particularly when there are no special services at New. berry. This little village, in common with the country at large, experienced something >f Saturday's wild and turbulent weather -at least so far as a suddenly falling ten perature and cutting wind went. It was a storm carnival which had culminated, Dh the "foam of that western wave!" Whether it be a wind-burst from the :hamber of the storm king, or a flood of raters upon the peaceful valleys below, )r yet a belt of fire sweeping its populous lnd prosperous plains, it is all the same, rhey each move with relentless and re. ;istless fury. And last week chronicles a nud and sand storm-in which the an ,ry wind which preceded the desolating >rairie fire through two states, dark ned the air with blinding masses of mud md dust. No wonder the terrified people, n the midst of such a perilous and piti ess situation-- bereft of houses, barns, tock, crops, food and clothing, should iave thought "the end of the world had ome!" How thankful and thoughtful, tnd how considerate and charitable ought ve to be in these times of frightful and ver recurring calamity. Little Earle, the 4-year-old son of Mr. md Mrs. J. 31. Bowers, died yesterday norning at 4 o'clock, after an illness of >nly two days. He was a joyous, hand ;ome little fellow, with bright face and tolden hair. In robust health and going theerfully from "sunshine to sunshine" he livelong day, it is hard to realize that le is dead! But it is too true, and we ire left with but the memory of his merry oice like "sweet bells jangled and out oif une." The announcement of his death vas quite a shock to our immediate com nunity. so long exempt from the sombre ;hadow of death, and its symplathy goes tut very tender-ly to the bereaved parents n this the dark hour of their first grief.
