Annual Meeting. The annual ineeting of the county conui:liissioilers was held on Tuesday A nuniber of ciaiit. were approved but very few ordered paid. 'aynent of taxes has been very slow this fall, and very little money is on haid. The levy for the next fis(:al year was made. Last year the levy was three mills. This year the county coniis sioners made the levv four imills. The increase is necessary o1 account of the destruction of bridges by the freshet. The loss to the county from this cause was estiiated by the conuissioners at $3,500. Reckless Shooting. On Tuesday night between i_ end 1 o'clock a party of persons in passing the residence of Mr. J. Thos. Mayes, on Mainstreet, fired some fifteen or twenty shots at his house, none went through the windows, but on Wednesday morn ing Mr. Mayes found several bullets around his house. It frightened his v'fe and children very much. Mr. Mayes has no idea as to who the par ties were or the intent with which the firing was done. Such reckless shootieg should be severely dealt with whether done with deadly intent or as a pastinie amusement in excessive hilarity. There is no fun in 't. The election on Tuesday in this county passed off very quietly. Very: few negroes turned out to the polls and the day wore the appearance of a half holiday. There was no Republican f ticket out except the ticket for presi dential elector;, for Harrison and Mor ton and also a few tickets for the prohi bition electors althhough we believe only one ballot was cast for this ticket in the county. We give herewith the to)tal vote given each candidate voted for. These figures are not official, but we think they will be found approxi mately correct. There was only one county ticket in the field, though in some cases there was sonie seratcling and at Prosperity, Jolly Street, Pomaria and Walton there were a good many votes east for Mr. J. A. Siigh for the Senate, although he was not a candidate. There was a very fair Democratic vote for this county. At Newberry there were a i few votes for Lawrence Jones for Con gress in opposition to Hon. J. S. Coth- t ticket was voted almost solidly. Col. ran. At other precincts the county i Schunpert received a solid vote for t Solicitor. The Amendment to the Con ititution in reference to the School t Commissioner is lost by 1,200 majority while the amendment in reference to change in terni of office of Probate t Judge is carried by 1,003 majority. There will be a'hot supper calesthen- P ics and a musical entertainment at the Academy building on Friday nigh t for the benefit of the musical depart ment of the school. The entertainment s< will be under the auspices of the facul- t) tv. This is the first one of the season and it is to be hoped that it will be largely attended and liberally patron ized. We want everybody to coie and bring somebody else along with t them. Mr. Editor, you and all of our Newberry friends have a very pressing invitation to attend. Prior to the 28th of 1i August, a number of the bright beam- t ing faces of New .,errians were seen al- c most daily on our streets, and oh! how J( polite and genial, and kind, and broth erly, and generous and whole souled 0 these fellows were; but since that time, f theirs, has been like angels visits "few 3' and far between," Conie back '!Jack" and "Jake," and Walter, and George, and Malcolm and 7" and all of you l. boys, come back to see us, again, and l; next Friday night, %i1 be a good time, a come. f ,.The election passed off very quietly a yesterday, and the vote was an exceed- c ingly light one for this precinct. We r do not like to see so.much apathy and t indifference manifested in general c elections, It seems that our people are fast forgetting the desperate, and even bloody struggle we had just twelye I years ago to secure a desirable govern ment, and unless we are more vigilant and mianifest a greater interest in the general Federal election it will only be a question of time, when the old enemy will again have us at his mercy. Un less we are mistaken in the tone of the Associated Press reports last night, n now stand a good chance, with all the election machinery in our hiands, to lose the great leader of the Democratic party. It is true that at this precinct "Granl-pap's hat." only got two votes in it, while Cleveland got 383. But just think Prosperity voted only a little over half of her strength. Too mnuch lethargy, too much indifference. We hope for the better. Let us fight the enemy more and ourselves less. Yu HE POMARIA. Rev. J. E. Berly, M. D., is staying< with his father, who is quite sick. H-1 M. Mayer & Co. is running a traveling steam gin in this community. There wvas a missionary picnlic at St. John's church last Thursday.
