A couple of weeks ago, as will be re membered, we published a glowing ac count of an olecric well in 1'allatferro county GO., taken from the Augusta cor respondence of the News and C'ourier. We gave it for what it was worth, although lthe statements of the correspondent seemed to be well authenticated, giving natines of responsible gentlemen who pretended to speak whereof they knew. 1'he following letter from Mr. James F. Todd, formerly of this county, now of Newberry, rather spolls the fine story : Editors Laurensville Herald : I went last week to the alleged Rheu matic or Electric Well over in Georgia. I have been a sutterer for about two years from rheumatism. I received no benefit from this well. There were about six more there at the same time, and I do not think any were being benefited. I could feel no electricity whatever. I would not advise anyone to go there, and especially not to go now, as accomodations are very poor. Respectfully, JAMES F. TODD. Newberry, S. C., Feb. 16, 1887. --Laurensvdle Herald, Feb. 18. Muperiut(eadent Iipscoa.ab. We drove to the gate of an enor inous building whose extensive and high walls betokened the housing of crime. It was indeed the State Peni tentiary. Col. T. J. Lipscoib, a pow erful man, cordially invited. us to In spect the establishment, but time was limited and we could only take a super fleial glance at its industrial and pimi tive life. Granite abounds in the viein ity and -enters largely into immense buildings where the criminals are con fined. To mitigate the heat of summer Col. Lipscemb humanely shielded the cell dormitories with a wooden protee tion which is almost like a verandh. Every device has been adopted to keep the convicts warmn In winter and cool in summer. The convicts of the State now unm ber 950, of whom 50 are white. The larger part are engaged in making shoes, stockings and stone cutting. The water arasigements are perfect and within the walls a garden of many acres supplies the establishment with the best of vegetables. Col. Lipscomb Is the right man in the right place. He is a discIplinarian. but a humauc one. He is stern in dutiful method-, but dispassionate in executiou. IIe has in many ways miti'rated the severity of )rison life, anf put an end to the atrocities of outside camps. I am as sured by the best citizens of Columbia that Col. Lipscomb is just the man for the position, and that the State and prisoners are most fortunate in having so remat kable an oflicer of the law.-j. R. R., in Augusta Chron:cle. PROVIDENCE.
