The reading farmers of the State were aroused. They felt the time had come for united and intelli gent effort. Having suddenly got rid of human slavery they also de sired to i,e emancipated from the -slavery to factors and money lenders. They wished to become free indeed. But the farmers must remember that ,enthusiastic conventions, high-sound ing resolutions, and the General As -sembly, under the control of farmers, -will not pay debts and lift mort gages on the farms. Even the re. peal of the lien law will not fill the empty cribs with corn and the barns with hay. They may vote and pass resolutions and enact laws until doomsday, and the meal tqb will be no fuller in consequence thereof. The fact is the farmers' rmovement got off on the wrong track. The en gineer did not understand the busi. siness. Instead of moving forward slowly and cautiously on the track of real reform and progress, which is a steep up-grade, he dashed down the political side track that looked so inviting. Hence the derailment and the disaster worse than that of the Santee trestle. An attempt is made to rally the farmers again and that for the avowed purpose of con trolling the General Assembly. If the real object of the farmers' move ment is a political one and they are using all this talk about bettering their condition as a sham in order to coutrol primaries, conventions and legislatures, then the farmers' move ment will scon resolve itself into a political machine. But the real farmers' movement has hardly be gun yet. One of the dangers is that farmers will be taught to look to con ventions and special legislation to help them in their daily work. They somehow think labor will be im proved by repealing the lien law and that all farmers in the legislature would bring blessings untold. Such teaching as this is a delusion. .If there are dlebts on the farm they have to be paid by individual effort. If labor is not trustworthy, it must be improved by good example and good pay. If the crops are poor the soil must be deepened and enriched. There must be general improvement in every nook and corner frotn tl.e pig penD to the parlor. If a conven. tion or any sort of meeting offers you any help, if it teaches you better how to do work, then attend that con vention. Do not be afraid to follow any "Moses" who will lead you t0 implrovedl methods in farming, full barns, comfort and elegance about the home, good, healthful reading for the family. Do not think for a mo. ment the farma i ~'movement got il backset in Columbia. It was not on trial there. Move forward, mnove slowly, move surely, with an eye tc individual success, and y'ou will not fail.- Curolina Spartan, Augu~st 17th. P~refers to Rustle ont the Outside. Capt. B1. IR. Tillmnan, the so-cale Agricultural Moses in a letter to th< Edgedleld Advertiser has withdrawr his candidacy for the Legislature at a representative from Edgefielt County. This is just what we ox p)ected. Capt. Tillman has awoke t< a painful realization of the fact thal among dliscreet representative men such as are usually found in a Statt Convention, ho is an inconsequentia cipher, and he knows that bie posi tion in the State Legislature wouk be no better. lie prefers to remnair on the outside as a rustling clasi agitator rather than go to the Legis lature aend be crushed by the weigh of lisa own empItiness and self sufll ciecy)L3. - A1ikea R?ecorder'.
