J Extravagance and credit have been the ruin, financially speaking of men. They are the antitheses of economy and cash, and they read. ily and unequivocally determine the standing and pecuniary ability of those who enlist under their ban ner. No one who is extravagant in his wants, or who goes largely into credit, can te in thrifty cir cumstances or entirely free long at a time from the fear of the sheriff. Extravagance and credit tend to poverty of the worst stamp. Unless a man resolves to get out of the clutches of. bith, and carries out this resolution with heroic forti tude and unswerving fidelity. he will never be any richer than he is, but, on the contrary, will in all probability grow poorer and poorer year after year. And if there is a single one of our readers who is now, tossing and plunging in this terribl.e "slough of despond,' we advise him to face right about at once, and get out on to the solid grond of economy and cash as soon as possible. If any have been a little too indulgent in supplying their "wants'-wants are not al ways ecessities-let them cut off hereafter every s,aperluous thing. buy nothing but what they absol utely need. and pay cash for all that they buy. This is not so hard to do, if one is really in earnest about it. What is wanted is a determined will that will listen to to allur ements to buy on time. and a little good contrivance and scheming how tc, turn about to gain time and avoid making bills. Unless a man can get back on the solid basis of cash and economy, no tactics will save him from eventual bankrupt cy. There is no wealth of peace of mind for a creditor community. The only safe men are those who live economically. dress plainly. and pay as they go. or at short and regular intervals. We say only those who do these things, and who are looking to the end rather than present moment, are safe. It is but poor comfort to think while one is working hard, that it will take all he can make to pay his bills at the years end. HOW TO4. DO IT. AsIthere a woman anywhere who has never been vexed to know what to have for dinner? This may he helped if on some happier day she sits down with pencil and -paper, and makes a list of the possi.ble dinners that are withen her power to' prepare; the kinds of meat and the *ays to cook them, the kinds of puddings and pies: whicl1 are on the bill'of fare. It is a fact that almost every housewife has a bill ofsire, though she might be sur pise :tf you were to tell her so. Tils -f~ is reaHy a great help; ver c often a good dinner. and one witb sufficient variety. might be put upon the table if one e uld o nI y think just wha:t to have at the p)rop er moment. A list which I saw for desserts comnmenced thus: "Prune pie, lemon pie. cornstarch pudding. plain, with fruit, or with chocolate; bread p udding, b)aked Indian pudlding, berries, lemon tart lets." A bushel of corn in hot weather, and with the pigs on grass, will make moure pork than two buehels next winter. Now that the bar resting is near ly all dlone by mgechinery it is pret. ty hard on the~ horses; see to it that they have the best of care and gen erous feeding. Go to see the sheep at lehst once a week. and don't tail to make them glad to see you by talcIng them some salt; but your visit will be just as welcome any other day as Sunday. Unless corn is good it is about the poorest crop a farmer can grow, and the character of the crop is more within the farmer's control than any other. Manure is never applied too heavily for corn. A slate with a pencil attached, hung .in the kitchen, on which to note down articles as you thinklof them." to be bought when you go to town will he found a great con venienee, and will save munch vex ation of spirit. Give hoss a little tar on their corn once every two or three- weeks till cold weather--a small quani'v smeared on their noses and cornias it is fed to them. Put tar mixed with sturgeon oil on the hogs to keel) the ticks otT. liens that steal their nests usu ally hatch e very rgg. One reason is that the eggs are commonly on the ground or where they will be occasionally moistened by rains, and thus some water is supplied to preserve life in the embryo chiek. When a wife has to get up tarly in the morning and light the fire, she inv, niably makes it warm for the old man.
