With the extension of gas-works, even to quite small villages, there is an increasing amount of so-called "gas-lime;" and, taking the year together, no other single question comes to us so often, as, what is the value of this product as a fertilizer When fresh from the gas-house it has an offensive odor, and so many associate unpleasant smells witi fertilize that they frequently over tina his material. When il minate gas is produced by heat ing bituminous coal in the retorts, several impurities are mixed with it, sulphur or compounds or sul phur among them. To remove these, one part of the process, is to pass the gas, on its way to the distri buting reseryoir, through boxes of fresh-burned lime. The sulphur unites with the lime, and forms calcium sulphide, formerly called sulphide of calcium, or sulphuret of lime, etc. When the lime ceases to longer act efficiently, it is thrown out, and .fresh lime introduced. This refuse lime is constantly of fered to farme:-s as a fertilizer, often at a nominal price. Properly used it may be as valuable as a mixture of common lime with some land plaster; improperly used it is pois onous to plants, as many have found to their cost and disgust, and when the sulphur and lime, or the calcium sulphide, is exposed to the air for a sufficient time, the sulphur is oxidized to sulphuric or sulphu rous acid, the calcium (or basic inetal of lime) is oxidized at the same time into lime, and the union of the two forms sulphate or sul pi,ite of lime, or both. The sul phate of lime is the same as plas ter, gypsum or land plaster, so muCh used as a fertilizer. The rest of the -refuse is mainly common slaked lime, though usually car bonated, making it just the same as air-slaked lime that has been some time exposed to the atmosphere. It will thus be seen that while the fresh gas-house lime is not a safe application direct to crops, or to soils to be soon seeded, yet if it be left sufficiently spread out, (bet. ter under cover from rains, but not absolutely essential), until disagree able odors have mainly passed away, which may take place in from two to six months, or longer, -the material is probably about eqaptio ommon air-slaked lime; or it may te'mewhat more valua ble on soils where land plaster pro. duces good results.-American Ag. ricultuLrist. SUN LIGBT IN STA BLES. We tried an experiment, some years since, to test the effect of absence of light upon a calf. We had two deep red calves of the same age (sixty days), one weighing 180 pounds and the other 182 pounds. The latter we placed in a dark room, with a trough that could be filled by a spout through a partition. The other was confined in the same *amount. of space, but in full light, and both were fed exactly alike for the next three months. 'rho object was to test the effect of light upon such a growing animal. At the end of the time, the one in the lig3ht weighed 430 pounds and the ote nthe dark 860 pounds; and its color had faded to a very palE ?dirty red. It. eyes were so much affected when admitted to the light, thetJtkJept them closed most of the tImafor tbe first week or two. The twe 9-eves 'were kept -on together, but the one from the dark room never fully recovered from this three snesths of dai-kness. It never re. covered its bright red color, al. though the color improved. Any one who noted these two calves, duringithis experiment, would never '.afser doubt the 9policy of a dark MtsbIe.- Sunlight Is indispensable to healthy vegetable and anal life. Every farmer sees his oat and dog seleet a belt of sunshine on the *oor to 'lie and bask in i and If he will watch his cattle when turned out, he will find them at once seek, ing theiasunyside of the barn yarcd And with air these Indications be, fore his eyes, still the farmer keepi his animals in a dark stable, muet to their discomfort and his peen Diary loss. We do nost, of course, include all farmers in this statement, for small minority fully understand the " I$etance of sunlight in stables and%nmake ample provision for iti introduction.-National Live-Stoc1 Jounald. FEEDING 0F HoRsEs-The fat tening qualities of corn as comn pared with oats, is shown by the greater amount of oil it contains being nearly double that of cats Therefore, if used as food for work ing horses, it should be given ir these proportions. Equal quanti ties of corn and oats should not be given whole, unless necessary t< bruise them for a special reason Corn ground with the cob adds t< its bulk, and does away with somn objections to its use. Hay fed witi grain, helps the digestion of th< latter. We should prefer not t< moisten the grain-particularly i: the animal is a greedy feeder Bran mashes should be given al least once a. week in place of grain or better still, carrots twice a 'eek ( A0Ierca* Agyleudtulst, -FOR BEEfR, SODA WATER, I E, &c.
