The conversion of the "House of Tiles" in the City of Miexico into a typ ical American drug store marks the passing of ond of the most palatial and unique structures ever erected in that city of interesting buildings. ainy persons in the United States remember the house as the "Jockey club," the most exclusive and aristocratic place of its kind in the republic, but for the past few years it has stood on a prom inent downtown corner, a bleak, de crepit structure, whose shiny and gaudy exterior of tile gave evidence of its former glory. Soon it will open for Iusiness as a drug store. The date when the building's foun dations were laid is lost in obscurity, but it is thought that It was started abliout 1590. Later it came into the possession (of Don Louis do lIivero, a man of varied career, who was re sponsible for its exterior cont of tiles. These latter are of blue, yellow and white, Moorish lin design, and were tle by artisans brought from Taln vern, Spain, by the Dominienn friars in the sixteenth century. They were iiotlelId in it speeial ceramic factory at Puelbin, about 75 itilles distant, and lie completion of this decoration was the occasion for a 1ubille c elel)rati lonl.
