Mr. Major made an eloquent ad dress eulogizing the soldiers and wo men of the Confederacy and defetiding the soithern soldier from the charge that he was a rebel and traitor. Ir. Major said that the war was a result of differences between two schools of thought, the one sc hoo! inl the iortih holding that the central guverinueIt should be supreiie inl matters at con flict between the several states, and the other selool in the south holding to the opposite view in that the state was a sovereigi power ani at liberty to withdraw frot the union ( should it so desire. It was the exercise and de fense of this right which they lield theirs that the southern soldiers went to war, he said, alt iot inl any enideav or to overthrow an established and recognized form of governnient. No better index to the spirit of the Con federate soldier, he said, could be pointed to thai that of their conduct after the war whent they leanic to admit that the principle they fought for had been lost and it was their new ditty to become loyal citizens under the united country. Following the address of Mr. Major, Mr. Todd real the names of Laurens soldiers who had passed away since the last Memorial Day. They were S. E. Itay, W. It. Set zler, W. 11. Franks and .loiti W. Ferguson. After the exercises proper were coiplete(l, tle clildren of the gradedi school dlecorated the graves of tle de parted soldiers.
