CRAIG DROPS DEAD. ^ 1 fi A Former Citizen of Lancaster SO And Pastor of the Presbyterian Church. ui The following account of the sudden demise of Dr. Craig of Atlanta, Ga., will be read with interest since lie at one time foi lived here and was pastor of the of Presbyterian church for a period during the war, having left hero tbi to enter the war as chaplain : tri Newport News, Va., Oct 24. ?Tlio morning session of the em one hundred and thirteenth annual convention of the Prosby- mi J sei terian synod of Virginia, Mary- Ki land and West Virginia, now being held in the First Presbyterian church, was brought to a tragic close at 11 o'clock this morning by the sudden death of te Rev. Dr. John Newton Craig, of lit Atlanta, 6a., secretary of tho T1 board of home missions of the w Presbyterian general assembly, ic Dr. Craig, undor a special 3 t 1 1 -1 , 1. . uruer ui ousmess, was aaaress- ?? ing the synod on the subject of home missions. He began his tli address with great force and H thoso who heard him say he was fientering on the finest address is he had ever made, but it was st evident as he proceeded, that he ra was in pain. He had been a' speaking half an hour and was just concluding his remarks, when, clutching his notes, he ^ said, "Brethren I can say no er more." - ^ Ho staggered to the nearest chair, his notes fell from his pr lingers, there was a faint gasp and ho died. The synod adjourned to meet this afternoon without concluding its business. Dr. Craig had always ex- ^ pressed a wish to die in liar- ^ ness. A hack was waiting at to tho door of tho church to convey in him to the depot as soon as he U finished speaking, as he intendcc ed to leave directly for South . ^ Carolina, where he was scheduled to make an address at the <p synod of South Carolina tomorrow. His wife and daughter w are here. All the pastorates of the de- 8 coased were in Mississippi and and Virginia. He came to At- ? lanta fifteen years ago, and since (,^ that time has been the life of ^nt the mission work from this con- *n ?ri tor. Dr. Craig's health through po ? " Ctl trio summer was not good, but he was feeling excellently when foj he left here. Mrs. Craig said at the time that she would never c* see him again, though there was Co no reason for such a thought f then. He was 70 years of age. He ~ leaves a wife and three children, Mrs. Bessie Brackett, of Virginia; Mrs. William Matthews, ti of this city, and John Newton J raig, of this city. At the time the sad news inched Atlanta there was no leniher of the family at home." [r. Newton Craig wa^ the first > learn it. One after - another 11110 lioHie to hear the dreadful iws.
