* Persistent Coughs A oough which seems to hang on in spite of all the remedies which you have applied certainly needs energetic ana sensible treatment, For twenty-five years that standard preparation of cod-liver oil, * SCOTT'S EMULSION has proved its effectiveness in curing the trying affections of the throat and lungs, and this is the reason why: the cod-liver oil, partially digested, strengthens and f vitalizes the whole system; the hypophosphites act as a tonic to the mind and nerves, and the glycerine soothes and neals the irritation. Can you think of any combination so effective as this? He sure you get SCOTT'S Emulsion. See that the tnan and fish arc on the wrapper. 50c. and $1.00. all druggists. SCOTT ft IIOWNH, Chemists. New York. A Progressive Farmer. The Anderson Intelligencer V makes the following statement in regard to the progre.-sive conduct of a farmer in that county : "There are sorn? people who have a sagacity and foresight considerably in advance of those ^ around them, which not. infrequently eminates from native talent, and is not the result of methodical mental training or wide observation. To tins iatter ciass we believe belongs our fiiend, Oliver Bolt, familiarity known to his friends as "Buck" Bolt, and whose farm home lies about three miles west of Anderson. As soon as it became a settled fact that an electric plant at Portnian Shoals would be developed, and that the pole line would pap? within half a mile of hip house, lie determined to operate his public cotton pin by eletric power. To this end he entered into a contract with the Anderson Water, Light & l'ower Co. for suflicient power to operate a 20-horse power electric motor, sold his steam engine, bought the electric motor, set it in position K and adjusted his machinery to it, and when the current was turned on about the first of last month, had the satisfaction of seeing hi? enterprise a complete success, This is, in all probability, the lirst T cotton gin in the world to operated by electrical power, and when it is considered that Mr. Holt is a plain, unassuming fanner, with no knowledge (if electrical power, except what he has observed here at home, he deserves inure man ordinary credit !or !il? enteJprise. Thfact that this gin was being operated by electric power had the client to increase the patronage of the gin, and it the current could have been turned on earlier in the season,v.e are informed that his patronage would have doubled. In this enterprise !\lr. Holt sets a pace for the farm ers of this State, indeed tor the entire cotton growing States ; and we shall expect to -ec many farm ers following closely in his wake in the near future. Klectrie power has the advantages over steam of cheap, ess, neatness, conveniencet less lia ; 1 ity to lire and perfec, \ safety forrtight op< ration." Wf Cliriftfiiihh 4 liccr. In Italy the Christmas repast is eaten between eight o'clock and midnight on Christmas eve, and at this repast is served turkey, , macaroni and stewed eels. The i eel is the principal dish, and each ! I cardinal receives a silver platter upon which are two eels, with j small rolls made of almonds and honey. Later in the day they have a dinner which includes stalled turkey. The Russians, on Christmas ' i day, adhere strictly to their national dishes. They have a . soup made of boiled cabbaire, beef 11 stock and sour cream, which is , I served from an immense punch ; bowl,?and with this is served a : roasted pig, weighing seven or eight pounds; with an apple i 11 , its mouth. This latter is known i :is "poracionok." The national Christmas dish of Switzerland is I he dish called > Geneva fritters, which is found alike on the table of the high and lowly born, for if this dish is not partaken of the family is supposed to be guilty of treason. Of course the celebrated sirloin of beef is the main dish of the ' English Christmas dinner, together with the English plum pudding and plenty of ale and porter to drink. The Ameiican Christmas dinner is much like the English, ex cept that the piece do resistance is the roast turkey, instead of the i roast of beef. Wo have, always, the mince pie, but we also have | the plum pudding. SCHOOL SUGGESTIONS. i What Sup't Mayftehl lias to Say About School Law. Some interesting questions relative to the school law have been asked by County Superintedent Kdwards, of Marion county, to , which Superintendent May field has replied at length. In his let , ter Mr. Mayfield holds: "Dear Sir : An extra fee can, not ho charged the pupils so long 1 as the public lounds laid. While the school is public it must he absolutely free. " In forming your new districts i your hoard will have to apportion the school fund among the dis triets on snnwi incf I.\ . vr...v juoi I i Ml can form some idea of what would ho a ju<t division hv taking the enrollment of the districts as thoy stand alter the division, hut i/ would not ho. perhaps, allege!her lair to take this as a guide, inasmuch as some of the schools hereto toro may have heen so located as to have heen poorly attended. Your hoard lias the power to make this division and will have to decide what is right thout the (list riot s. "Your hoard will divide the fund for the new year on a has is which you yourselves will have to make up from the reports of the schools now located in the | new districts, the reports being j those covering the work done last year. "If the taxpayers who has no children sees proper to take children to live with him and while ! OAflTOniA. there to send fchem to school,) there is no law against it. The: children thus taking and sent to school would be enrolled as belonging to that school, and therefore increase the enrollment of that district for this year, which would be an enlarged basis upon which they would draw next year. In other words, they teach in this year and draw for it next year. "When a division is made and) new districts formed and trustees appointed for new districts, the! terms of office of the trustees in j the districts from which the new destricts are formed tennina'es, il th" whole of the ohl districts t are air orbed the old truste s continue as tmsloi's of tl>" which is not embraced in the new districts. Do not misunderstand mo. I mean to say that il you take one district and cut it into two or more school districts and! appoint trustees for each of the districts formed out of the old districts, the old hoard of trustees pass out of ollice and new trustees must he appointed for each of the new districts, but if you form a new district by taking parts of two three or four districts and leave the body of the old districts mainly una Heeded, you appoint trustees lor the new district, which have control of it, and the old hoard remain in control of the districts. "The time lor holding an election for the purpose of voting a special tax is limited to .June, for the reason that the auditor must complete his tax duplicate and turn them over to the country treasurer by the first of July, and therefore, unless the levy is made before the lirst of July, it could not be entered upon the tax duplicate, and the tax could not be collected. From January to .July is a half year, and I think it altogether probable that the people could decide within that time whether or not they would vote a special tax. If any change in that provision of the law is desirable write me at once, that I may take it under consideration, and it it appears advisable, make a recommendation to the fourthcoming legislature."?liegister.
