THE LEGIsLATUnE deserves high praise for the manner in which it is going to work, and for its wisdom thus far displayed, both in favoring good measures and in killing olrbad ones. Let it fulfill its promise of coming home for the Christmas holi days, and.it 'will have gone far in instating itself in the public confi dence. Fewer Elections. The News and Courier favois :a extension of the ternis of office, so that the State need, not - be harassed by so frequently recurring elections. South Carolina has been cursed with politics ever since the war, and the people need rest. In the anomalous condition of our politics It is the highest duty of every citizen to par ticipate actively in all electiolns, and relief can be properly obtained only by having fewer of3them. The crea tion of longer terms will tend some what, also, to check the scramble for office, and will necessarily result in securing greater efliciency on the part of public servants. Under the pres cut law their seats are scarcely warni before they are bounced out to make way for raw lihnds; while, in case they give satisfaction, it is much bet ter to allow then longe'r time without requiring the voters to go through the needless ceremony of re-electing them. The State officers should be chosen for four years. The expected passage of a bill by the Legislature authorizing the gov ernor to 1111, by appointment, all vacancies arising, from whatever cause, In odd years will be a great. relief. Fairfleld has at, present the prospect of holding an election every year for soine office or another. But if this law passes, the governor will, next year, appoint a sheritl' and a boilrd of county colnlissionerj to serve until tile general election of 1880, and in 1881 will appoint a clerk of court to hold office until tihe election of 1882, after which the terms of all the county o'flic.rs will expire On even dates. This is a very simple device for getting arountd a 'great trouble, and tie passage of the act will he one of the wisest pieces of legislation of the session. Bubbling Champagne and Brotherly Love, If religion is 'Cho great civilizer, it is no less true that-champaigne is the great harmonizer. The bitterest .enmities are exploded wit h thle popping of corks, and protestations of undying love and reconciliation bubble over with the fVothing glasses. No more notable instance of this canl be adduc ed than a recent banquet given to thme astor, John McCullough, by the celebrities of Washington, as reported * by the Jenkins of the New York Her'al (nlot Mr. Nordihofl'this time.) After showing that General Slher man presidled at tihe table, anid that the Executive Departmenit was repro sen ted by Secretary Sherman, tile Supreme Bench by Justice Miller, and the Legislative branch by a numerous delegation of Senators and members of Congress, all of whom fired away "'without restraint and with the best feelings of amity for each othler," tihe reporter concludes: But tihe mnost remfarkab)le scene was enacted whlen, ill response to thle toast to tile legislative branch, Senator' wings an atosof tetwo great. political parties, clasped hands(1 acmross the table and intechangedl expres sions of,the warmlest cori(lality and11 friendship amid thle - wildest. c5t husi asm. This result was b)roughlt abont by some felicitous observation of Mr. Blaine, sng.gested by what the guest of the evelnnig had1( said on the subject of his receiving so much assistance in his early career thmronghth ntl lectumal force of Is patron and prme Ir. Now, if never, was the! bloody cliasm bridged and the uihap-' py Iem1ories of the war buried im utter oblivion. Some of the more 8uSceptiIlo gentlemen were al'ected to tears.during this tillling cpisod6. The festivitics were then resiumed and werle protracted until nearly dav light. This was, indeed, a gratifying 4peclacle-thle re4colciliationl of, thle Norit and South a er years of bitter est hostilit-y. And to think that a little chaitipigne did it. How iuch better had this device been tried at anl earlier stage. It*, for instance, the three thousaid millioi dollars wasted in the war had been invested ini a thousand million bottles of clam-: pagne; or better, three-Vourths in champagne, and the balance in ginger ale fori the red-ribbon teetotalers. Sectional issues would have been over-1 Whelined in (hat sparkling torrent as Clarence was drowned in the butt. of Malmsey wilne. When Blainle anid Blackburn shake h1an1ds, the average statesmen can all'ord to embrace. We only hope that the army, and the three co-ordinate branches of government., including tdhp '"fourth estate" that re ported the proceedings, and the disciple of Melpoiene, in whose honor the chap1)agn1e fl owe, were not borne by policemen to the bosoms of their respective imilies in the gray dawn, to the melodious notes of "We won't go home till mnornin"'. And what is more to the l>urpose, we trust that Senator Blainue's champagne sat r kindly oil his stomach, so that lie will have no trace of headache when he makes that promised speech on the South Carolina and Louisiana clec tion E1.
