Items of News from the iLeastorville I Neighborhood---Somo Portinent In-! quiries. .Editors NEWs AND HERALD: Wo sometimes see an invitation in your excellent papor for matters of a local nature from the differont sections of the county, and we have concluded to say a word or so about the "Dark Corner." And just, here, Messrs. Editors, we would ask you to toll us how this section got the name ,f "Dark Corner." It is generally believed that editors know overything and what they do not know they cAw very soon get from a reporter: hence the question. The people of this section, we think, come as near earning their bread by the "sweat of the brow' as they do perhaps upon aniy other part of the globe. Seldom entering into speculations of any kind, they genevally, from the old man down to the small boy, make regular hands in the crops. As a general thing, since the wvar, they have all made money, notwvithstLanding the heavy tribute to Cmesar'; and now, with the taxes so reduced, our future is full of promise. Our farmers have purchased but a small quantity of commercial manures, but have entertained thme idea all the time that the old-fashioned stable-manure is the cheapest, bost and most permanent. We wanted to ask you another question, (not that we care anything about the old fellow) that is, what has become of A. S. Wallace? We have not heard of him since the memorable fox-chase by T. W. W. and others last fall. The "Corner," for the first time since the war, has had the benefit this fall of a two months' session of a public school. This school was taught by Miss Withers. She gave such entire satisfaction, and the children all learned to love her so much, that they constrained their parents to raise money by private subscription to employ her for two months more. We are pleased to say that the subject of education is engaging the minds of our people more than ever before. We hail with thanks and gratitude the prospects of a well based public school system, in connection with the subject of education. We can say (and keep inside of the lines) that this neighborhood can show as many and as fineolooking children as any other "Dark Corner" in the world.. One more request, and we will stop. Can't you give us the differ ence in the tax this year and last, showing the gain to .the county under a civilized government?i SP1E(AL NOTICES.
