DEAVi 01 AN OLD CITIzE.-Mr. David Canipholl, a well-known citi zon of Fairfield, died on Tuesday morning. His romains were inter rod in the Presbyterian cemotory yesterday afternoon. Mr. Cohnpbell was in th sovonty-socond year of his ago and was hold in high esteem by all who know him. We have had the pleasure of moet ing Mr. J. W. Aingor, the travelling agent for the Ecloctic Magazine. The Eclectic is everywhere recog nizod as one of the best periodicals in the country, and we heartily com mend it to our readers. It is pub-. lished by E. R. Polton, Now York, at $4.00 per annum. TInE EXTEND, D.-A telegram re ceivod yester(lay morning from Comptroller-Genoral Hagood states that ho has extended for fifteen days the time in which taxes may be paid without the penalty. This vill be good nows to the taxpayers, all of whom are willing enough, but hardly able, at this particular time, to meet the demands made upon them. The caso against Cardozo, for conspiracy with Richad H. Gleaves, Samuel J. Leo, Josephus Woodruff and A. 0. Jones to cheat and dofraud the Stato by means of a fraudulent warrant on the State troasury for q-1,000 in favor of "C. L. Frankfort," a fictitious per sonage, will come up this morning in the Court of General Sessions for Richland county. LINDsAY's PATENT WASE.-This is a con trivaneo reco n tly invented by Jno. C. Lindsay, of North Carolina. It is sai(d to be an excellent thing. The right for Sonth Carolina has been purchased by Rev. J. D. MAlon, of this county, and Messrs. Dunlevy & Pant are n w e1;ago1 in mann1 facturing the washers. A spoeimer may be seen at the office of TiE NEws AN HEnA). The price of a family right, with one washer, is $2.50. STATE FAIR NOTES.-Brig. Gon. F. M. Bamborg, of Barnwell, will command the military parade at the State Fair. Governor Hampton will review the troops ; and lie ros quests that the members of his staff that can conveniently (10 so will attend him on the review. Governor Vanco, of North Care lina, will certainly accept the in vitation to deliver an address at the Fair. His formal acceptance has not yet been received, but they say he is coming nevertheless. T HE BAcK POLL TAx.-Somo doubt has arisen as to the right of the State to assess and collect the poll taxes for past years-that is of any year other than for which the assessment is made. The question was first raised by Mr. C. H. MVoise, auditor of Sumter county. After a full consideration of the matter, Attorney.-General Conner decided against the assessment, and the comp)troller-genleral has issued in structions to the county auditors accordingly. The furniture ordered for Mount Zion School has arrived. It con sists of a handsome Franklin school globe, but quadrant, a geared tellurian ; a full set of large sized outline maps, eleven indlestructiblo charts; containing diagrams illus, trative of natural philosophy and kindred sciences; charts, penman ship and grammar ; and a set of mnathematioal figures and bodiost The globe was presented by Mr. James B. AProLIION REJE.oTED.--The fol.. lowing has beon forwarded to us by Hon. Jno, H. EvWins, M. C. It ex POsT OFFICE DEPARTMNT, Arroi rrMEWi OFF1c., October 25, 1877. Sm-A proper regard to tho economical and oilcient administr tion of this Dopartment forbids the multiplication of Post Offices Within short distances of oech other, or at points not directly on mail routes. In tho former cases, it has boon found that the revenuos of the ser vice aro not generally increased, nor the public convonienco pro moted, as expected. In tho other case, whoro the travel of the mail is increased, the oxponso almost in variably rceeds t1je proceeds of the new office. Tho Postmastor General is there foro constrained to decide against the application for a Post Offico at Flint Hill, in the County of Fair field, and Stato of South Carolina, and the appointment of B. F. Boul waro as Postmaster, because that placo is not on any mail route now in operation. Very respectfully, Your obedient servant, JAMES HILLAU, For First Assistant Postmaster General. HioN. JOHN H.
