The' children were out in full force, an~ a goodly numb. of grown-up pea plo were also in attendanco. TNo children amused themselves tby swinging, playing and walking aboutsthe grove. The dinner was a very fine one, and was of c4nurse A greatly enjoyed. The Cornet Band was present for a while, addis coursed some of the usil fine music. In the evening, after the picnic proper, there was a (game of bamse ball near the grovo/' between the Athletics and the Carol n~as. The result was a victory /for the Athletics, by a score o 9 to 0. Robert son. HAMPTON RIFLE GUARD.-TI)i company celebrated its first anni vorsary on Thursday last. Thero wer over forty men in ranks. Tho ine wore black cloth suits, and wit) their broach-loading rifles, nov accoutromonts, and campaign color flying, presented a very handsomi appearance. Formed in town, th corps marched in columns of four to the beautiful spring on the lan of Dr. Jno. D. Palor, there to en gage ill targot practice. Tho targe was twenty-four inches in circum ference. Each man was allowe, three shots. The judges wore Col H. C. Davis, B. E. Elkin and IR. C Lamar. They awarded the fir. prize to Capt. R. S. Dcsp-ortes, an the second to Lieut. A. .F. R1uff-th latter being for the worst shot o the board. The judges, in makin their report, mentioned that Mr. I A. Walker made the best sing! shot. A heavy rain camo on durin the shooting, and the ladies wer ubligod to leave the ground an tako shelter in the cotton-shod c 1idgoway. After the firing, th company marched to the cottou shod, and the prizes wore presente by Colonel Davis in a graceful an appropriato speech.
